Arizona just reported *88* newly-reported COVID deaths--another staggering record. Arizona just reported the percent positive rate of tests today was *28.3%* -- this is...a numbing number. |

The coronavirus has infected a total of 84,092 people and killed 1,720 people in Arizona so far. The state’s previous single-day high in the number of additional cases was 3,593 on June 23 ahead of President Donald Trump’s scheduled event in Phoenix. While an increase in Covid-19 testing and a potential lag in data reporting of the daily case numbers could account for the rise in positive cases, the number of hospitalizations in Arizona have steadily increased over the past weeks. According to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by the Covid Tracking Project, Arizona reported 2,516 people currently hospitalized on a seven-day average, a near 35% increase compared with a week ago. Arizona is nearing max capacity of intensive care unit beds with 1,495, or 89%, of the state’s ICU beds in use as of Tuesday. The number of ventilators being used at hospitals also reached a record high of 795, according to the state’s department of health. [link to www.cnbc.com (secure)] |

Funny, but that was precisely Donald Trump’s strategy in February. Thread: Just in from Trump - new strategy for COVID-19: “It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear" Maybe it stil, is. Who knows. He hasn’t said anything about it in a week. |

Contingency planning is now being ramped up to provide excess capacity when the hospitals are full. “We’re all nearing our capacity,” says Dr. Robert Leverence, chief medical officer. He says the hospital’s models show “by the middle of next week, or the end of next week, we should look at another doubling of the number of hospitalized patients in town.” If that occurs, the system will be overloaded. "Frankly that will be hard for us to hold that capacity," Leverence says. Currently 802 people are hospitalized in Bexar County due to the virus. That's up from 93 at the start of the month. The current 7-day trend of deaths is also the steepest it has ever been and we are less than ten days into this spike that is still growing exponentially. In about a week, the population of the initial part of the new infections spike will begin dying and continue to rise at the slope of the ongoing new infections rate. That is not going to be pretty. |
