I have a few laptops, one is not windows. I also hide IP on window machines.

It was a real question, tell me what you think not using windows solves?

What browser are you using? Most record everything including all your purchases. Everything is using and snooping your private information. What email do you use? Do you log into sites? Do you buy stuff? Do you hide your IP?

Hate to tell you but even GLP know the IP of hubs used to hide IP's as I am sure most sites do.

So in all seriousness, What else are you doing beyond Linux.

I prefer used HP tower computers and run linux. Last computer cost $60, but I paid $110 for the one I'm getting ready to use. The $110 got me intel core i7, a 2 TB HDD but only 8gb of ram and it's got windows on it, which haven't used for years. I'll try the 8gb ram but I'll probably have to pump that up.
32" High def monitor, two 4' tall speakers, pioneer receiver and I've got a Rig. I love it.
I'll probably get windows running and pull the 2t hdd, install a 500gb SSD and load linux mint 19 or so.

My advice is to stay out of caves, even if you are a diehard Windows fan.

Unfortunately, I need to build a Windows machine soon that is faster so I can run a bunch of music production software that I already paid for. And it's not Linux compatible of course.

So, I'm stuck with Windows for that purpose.

However, this thread is inspiring me to build a Linux machine to place beside it.

You are into music production too? Ive been demoing some software to see what I like but some are too complicated and ill be getting rid of them for freeware software that is way easier for being new to music production.

I didn't know there's so much free software out there that is pretty high quality.

However you can run lots of windows programs on linux using wine I believe.

I think that is a great idea.

You will be impressed with Linux's software for video and music editing.

Start with Linux Mint. Learn it well and install it, break it and reinstall it MANY times until you feel comfortable.

I promiss you that you won't regret it!

I am a BIG fan of the whole idea of Open Source! It just feels like the right way to live to me.

I built my current PC based on this Dell Tower above. It is a perfect base for a Linux PC build.

But, I bought mine from Ebay instead. I then upgraded a few components. I am running Linux Mint 17.3.

This is the PC I'm using right now. It's a 10 years old PC, but it's plenty fast for my needs.

There is something satisfying to me saving an old PC from the scrap heap.

Use a Raspberry Pi, it's cheap and simple. Don't expect performance out of it though. It is good enough for most web browsing.

USB thumb drives are cheap enough now, get a 64GB or 128GB and load the OS on it. Then you can boot using the OS on the USB drive instead of the internal PC drive.

You can also create Virtual Machines on your Windows PC and run multiple OS's (all flavors of Windows and Linux). Save the Virtual Disks when you have a clean install of the OS or take snapshots of them. It won't screw up your original Windows OS on your PC and if you fubar your Virtual Machine, you can easily restore it to a known point.
