I like the 80's living dead films, they aren't as bad as most would claim.

A few gory little gems often left out of this type of thread:

The Prowler 1981, excellent SFX done by Tom Savini

The Burning 1981, more SFX by Tom Savini

Scarecrows 1988, the one with Ted Vernon

Tom Savini....

That man had his hands in everything/anything good when it comes to horror.

Everyone loves the writer or director, but the SFX guys are just as much make or break.

Great suggestions and thanks for bringing up the name of a legend.

That man is as much of a part of horror as any other, including Romero himself.

Re: Best horror movies of the '80s?
Five films that often get overlooked.
1. The Stepfather
2. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
3. The Possession
4. The Entity
5. Near Dark

The Entity is based on a true story but Hollywood had to change it when the actual event produced evidence of bizarre light effects in the room that were photographed...almost certainly a demon.

Re: Best horror movies of the '80s?
The Possession is an art-horror film, so not everyone's cup of tea,but Isabelle Adjani possession scene is terrifying. You can find that and then decide if it's something to see.

The Thing is cosmic Lovecraftian horror that paved the way to In the Mouth of Madness (1994), which I think is one of the best supernatural horror films ever made. Gehenna is probably like that film.

Everything else like the Shining is always on lists.

Re: Best horror movies of the '80s?
A horror film is supposed to cathartic like a roller coaster ride, so cheap ones use gratuitous violence to shock, but are repulsive, not scary.

What is genuinely scary is the reality of malevolence, and so the most extreme manfestations are demonic. Few are realistic and approach parody which then snaps the viewer out of the suspension of disbelief. That is done to "relieve" the vjewer like the roller coaster has less scary moments, then geafs up anxiety again.

Now it's weak jump scares and in the worst ones, the soundtrack even enforces these.

That is dismally ineffective.

The first Sinister film is genuiney scary as you discover who is the real demonic malevolence inciting the events.

Old school horror like Robert Wise's The Haunting is far better. That is why it's stood the test of time.
