Re: Real INFLATION is here!!
$45,000 base pay today is equivalent to $22,500 in 1990 which was a lousy wage then.

So basically if you and your wife make $90,000 then you are making what a single guy working as an industrial mechanic or electrician made as a craftsman in 1990...and working in a very low expense region.

They hakved wages and that is not even discussing health insurance which was ruined along with most benefits.

Sure some in urban areas make MORE, but what is median price home cost? It's ridiculous, so you make even less in purchasing power than someone in a rural area.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70727027

One big drawback from the rural areas are that you dont have many options when it comes to stores. Keep this in mind: city/suburban areas are generally way cheaper on prices for just about everything because there are so many stores competing. In rural areas you may have 1 maybe 2 stores and they can charge what they want.

Btw, i much prefer rural areas...

What products are you noticing big price increases on in the last few months/weeks? I bought a washer 2 months ago and now the base price on the same washer is $150 higher!!!! That is a 30% inflation rate in 2 months!!!

Then you have to consider that one in 1987 could start as a craftsman job with noneducstion, just on the job training. There were union aprentice jobs too. Either way, in 3 years and no college, one could make 45K in 1990.

But today, everyone goes to college so large debt just starting off.

Say you worked from 1987-1990, and then earned 45K. Your buddy back then went to college so earned zerobut incurred debt. So you made maybe 108K +45K so $153,000 back then while they had a negative networth of -30,000.

Sunflower seed hearts for birds was $30/75lbs in January. June it was $75/75 lbs.

Yogurt is $1 per small 1/2 c serving. That's crazy.

Utilities are the same price, but the luxury of cable is 25% higher.

WAY too many times Walmart has 1 price on the shelf and another at the register. Kroger seems to be more competitive with the 5 buy discount.

Back then, some guys straight out of college and maybe working as elementary teachers wondered, "Why the heck did I go get a degree at all"?

They could have made 153,000 likely more with overtime instead of going to the university. It was worse because they had to get their masters and beyond like rank 1 to teach in middle and high school.

It was smarter to work for a factory and get settled and marry. Those guys waiting were 22 and restless while others were settled in their first homeswith a pretty wife and with a baby on the way.

Back then when you calculated lost wages and benefits versus a degree and debt, then it was foolish. You would have to eventually make up the difference, so honestly that meant the headache of management. A lot of engineers could do it, but only if they ended up in management.

It was equally smart to start a business say as a subcontracter for housing.

Say a young devout man wants to be a pastor. The situation is bad given the open hostility to Christianity. Churches are closing in urban zones. You need a bachelors and seminary training and would be lucky to get paid $40,000. You can't ever pay off your loans and make up the lost wages.

After along series of youth a d assoxiate pastors jobs, you might work for a large church, but with the pandemic, lots of churches arein trouble financially.

It used to be the smart path was becoming an RN by a 2 year associate's degree as the wages were high enough and the degree short time wise, so a very smart way to make decet wages. Inflation has hit them hard. To cope means a lot of overtime and most likely would cause divorces in any young ladies in that field.

That also depends how rural you live...

City people make more money, therefore merchants charge more because people make more money...

I have relatives on Long Island NY. Their meat prices are typically twice as much as mine and I live just outside of a small town in Oklahoma...

Gas prices are less expensive here due to less State taxes and the refineries are in Texas. Overall, it is less expensive to live here. New housing is going up for $130K-$150K. Pre-existing homes can be found below $100K. Therefore, don't have to make as much since I don't live in NYC or a big city...

Government subsidies inflate the price of everything, especially in cities. Housing, medical care, education, food. Everything the government is involved in subsidizing gets inflated. Why? Because pool of potential customers is expanded.

It's recovering rather nicely here in Oklahoma. People are spending more and have more time to fix their vehicles and things around their home. Stores are packed with customers and restaurants are doing great. The only thing not open are the movie theaters and some bowling alleys. Otherwise, it is a V-shaped recovery here...

Even back then in the nineties, a frugal husband could fix everything himself, and live modestly, and buy meat in bulk and have a freezer, and rarely by nice clothing, and do fine. You went camping instead of going to the beach to save money.

I don't see how young couples make it now. It's destructive to the family by design so anti-christian.

One routinely saved children's clothing for your other kids as hand me downs, and even gave them away to friends at church to help other young couples. Old cars frequently went this route too.

You hardly ever bought new appliances or furnishings. You bought used appliancdes and repaired them as they were not complicated.u

People were just more generous and kinder then. They also had more practical skills or were poorer as a result.

If you can't save anything, how can you tithe or ever take a family vacation or pay for your kids college or deal with unexpected vehicle issues or unemployment?

I think young married couples must either not save at all or are living on borrowed time when unemployment hits.

“I apprehend no danger to our country from a foreign foe . . . Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing. Make them intelligent, and they will be vigilant; give them the means of detecting the wrong, and they will apply the remedy.”

In WA state its 13.50/hrs or $27k/year if you can actually get 1080 hours (hint, you can't w one job)...still, I managed to save a third of the $19k I brought home last year.

Inflation is really happening fast here though. Used cars inflated the most, old pickups have tripled in value since March, so much that I'm now seeing 88 ford ranger 2wd w 300k miles going for $3500, that truck was unsellable over $800 last year. Electronics, if you can find them, have only gone up 20-25%, food is up across the board with a typical grocery trip up 30% for me.

I haven't had to stop saving yet, but I'm not saving nearly what I was last year.
