The idea that the US and China wouldn't risk a conflict because of nuclear weapons doesn't square with what's happening: Both sides are doubling down on anti-ship missiles and ISR. That speaks to at least a willingness to trade ships and missiles for some time.

A #B52 bomber from Louisiana took off from home station on July 4th and participated in a maritime integration exercise with two aircraft carrier strike groups in the South China Sea before landing at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.
