So probably not so big a loss as it seems. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55611245 This could be true....no one is starving out there, there is no shortage of potatoes reported, so.... |

No, .gov shut down the restaurants and 55% of the destined potatoes had no where to go but into a hole. This .gov shutdown has set back the economy for you, me, our children and grandchildren. That doesn't make sense. Even if we're not eating at restaurants we're still eating somewhere, so those potatoes are still needed. And if they're destroying them then there is or will be a shortage. This is such a gross waste of food, especially when so many people could use the extra food for their families. There are millions who are out of work. They could give them to homeless shelters, but I'm sure there's a law to prevent decency and generosity. Supply Chain Moving a product costs money. Do your homework. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74896242 They did give them away free, by the bag full, box full and pickup truck load. It cost them a lot of money just so they could do that. It cost a lot of money just to bury them too. Do you think the people and machines that move those potatoes run on magic? :magic: |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59095957 There were issues duringthe Dust Bowl where livestock was going to die and no one acted in time. It's criminal to waste food. Just watch the video below and you will see and realize how many potato growers – especially in the Northwest of the US – suffered an unprecedented and terrible catastrophe this year when the COVID-19 crisis hit the industry… It is sad, it is nearly unthinkable – but it is real… [link to www.businessinsider.com (secure)] what a shame, 55% go to restaurants that were shuttered, a lot of restaurants will go bankrupt so that revenue will need to be replaced somewhere?? So many ways to cook potatoes and very filling, no one should be hungry in this country!! I have seen struggling people buy a couple of frozen pizzas when they could have bought 20#'s of potatoes to help feed their family, makes no sense but with so many that rely on Schools to feed their kids two meals a day it's not a wonder. (dumbed down society) I planted red, white and Russets this year, we had new potatoes for supper last night along with fresh green beans and Squash from the garden also leaf lettuce and cucumbers, I have tomatoes but none are ripe yet, I like my meat but when the garden is producing like it is now we will just eat vegetables a couple of times a week, today I will be cutting Broccoli so we will add that to the menu. My wife works with a single lady who is raising her Grandkids due to her kids being Addicts, we send a lot of garden Vegetables to her along with fresh eggs and meat when we butcher in the fall, she is very appreciative unlike some that complained because I didn't wash the FREE eggs lol lol no more eggs for the bitchers, their loss! sorry for the ramble, eat healthy as you can and stay safe! would rather have it & not need it then need it & not have it |

Interestingly, a potassium-rich diet is linked to many powerful health benefits. It may help reduce blood pressure and water retention, protect against stroke and help prevent osteoporosis and kidney stones. [link to www.healthline.com (secure)] My relatives have always been big potato eaters. Most eat potatoes in some form daily (baked, potato salad, french fries, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried, hash browns, etc.). I don't recall any of them having blood pressure problems, stroke, or kidney stones. Just good genes? Maybe. Diet may have had a lot to do with it as well. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78785509 If dehydration were a preserving method there'd be boxes of instant potatoes now, alas. Fine then, just chuck them into a hole, don't even think of using them for feed stock for pigs or compost heaps. Good points. At the very least, there are people who are short on money, and food banks short on food. A little philanthropy would go a long way. Grocery stores were short on potatoes too. Big chains would have bought them up. But it so much easier to throw a frickin' tantrum, and disregard the cost of growing those potatoes. Moonstar |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69543057 United States 07/06/2020 10:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I recommend people watch Black '47. The Irish potato famine largely because they overfocused on the potato crop, then had crop failures and pests and people went terribly hungry. It is an excellent history film. The acting is very moving and espexially if that your heritage, your kids need to know what their ancestors faced. Some Christians were mean and would offer soup to people who were starving, only if they attended a church meeting. It was called "taking the soup". Other Christians, invariaby devout English, just fed people and asked people to attend. The cruelest misery was since the Irish were divested of the land and tenant farmers, since the crops failed, they couldn't pay the rent. They would be evicted, then return, and British soldiers, sometimes even Irish who were in the English army, then had to tear off roofs and people froze to death. That ended up causing terrible religious unrest as some English landlords treated the Irish as less than human. When in fact, they all could have been saved. Problems to this very day. Ultimately people who could, fled to America and we largely benefitted from many groups including Scotch-Irish from the Ulster region. |

Learn and be like them, because it could happen here. You want to pull out every trick you know so you'd family can eat at least a little something. |
