Imagine you're in jail and you have a cellmate that says they're going to stab you as soon as they finish sharpening their prison shank.

Now imagine that you've tried to alert the guards and they won't move you to another cell or even TRY to find and confiscate your cellmates shank before it's done.

You'd have to be absolutely stupid to not do everything in your power to get the weapon away from them or keep them from finishing it.
