Anonymous Coward User ID: 70657425 United States 07/07/2020 04:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | During the colonial period, some impoverished English people turned to crime as there was no social support framework. So some were out in debtor's prisons which was highly illegal. But banishment might happen where they were allowed to be released, put aboard a ship bound for the New World where there were lots of opportunities, and then charged with not returning under any circumstances. To do so, then required paying off uscrupulous ship captains and sneaking off the ship. Some were caught and executed. Some I think went to Australia. |

They gave those up in exchange for criminal behavior. Im looking only at giving them the ability to provide for themselves, remove the expense from the taxpayers, and re-educate them for when they are eventually released. Lifers or death row....not in this discussion... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 78041896 United States 07/07/2020 05:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I know first hand that the system is indeed rigged. For the sake of honesty, I deserved to be punished for what I did, but I believe context should matter in some crimes and i wanted a lesser charg. The glaring problem is in how it was handled... My public defender was not from the public defenders office he worked for a private law firm. The government requires them to do so many hours/cases as a public defender at a huge pay cut. I got treated as youd expect. I never even met my lawyer until the day of court. I told him I needed to talk to him about the case, he pointed to the discovery and literally got an attitude "what is there to talk about? Its all right here!" This is MY lawyer... I obviously have no shot. He was also buddy buddy with the prosecutors which i found odd. Laughing, joking around... how hard is it to imagine they go out for drinks... On top of the psychologically attacking nature of jail... its almost impossible to defend yourself properly. It certainly doesnt feel like "innocent before proven guilty". Those words are as meaningful as your wife telling you she loves you everytime she leaves the kids home alone to cheat on you. It keeps our mouths shut while they are betraying the shit out of you! |
