Mortality rate, for now, is indeed less than 1%. This is what data is showing. The infection numbers are considerable. US has over 3 million infected and hospitalization is needed in about half these cases.

The health system is finite and can cope only so much. The number of infected getting too high, can easily overflow the health system. Then mortality rate can skyrocket. In other words: If the number of infected in need of hospitalization is higher than what health system can cover, death rate climbs. And not only for COVID cases, for all kinds of medical conditions. It can come to a state where a stroke victim might not be able to get the necessary care.
