What's controversial about it? Hong Kong reverted back to Chinese control a long time ago in accordance with international agreements. Get over it.

Yeah this law is really bad, anyone who opposes party policy, says anything negative about china or hong kong can be arrested for sabotage/dissent/terrorism. The party reviews cases and can select a case to be 'tried' on the mainland. For the cases in HK itself the local party officials appoint the judges.

Even saying something considered negative about the CCP outside of China or Hong Kong can lead to an arrest as soon as you hit 'Chinese' soil.

The law is active per the first of July and is not retroactive, so people get cucked with a clean slate.

People that were part of Hong Kongs democratic system can no longer mention democracy as that is considered subversive.

One reason this is a huge deal: Hong Kong is where a lot of the international drug trade has done its banking, going back to the Opium Wars.

It's yet another reason the War on Drugs will end, probably in just a few years now, maybe sooner even. What is the point of the international illegal drug trade if the Chinese government and/or CCP itself has such a large share of it?

The main reason the War on Drugs will end soon though is that the elites don't need it anymore. They just get all the free money they need directly from the central banks now. So now it's all just a lot of trouble without even any cynical or self serving reason to exist.

As the world economy is rebuilt following the Covid 19 collapse, it doesn't look like it will be part of the future.

China knows that. It's not about China having to give it back to the UK. Instead, Hong Kong will lose a lot of the legal privileges that made it a world financial center. It remains to be seen if they can retain that industry and status much at all.

I get the feeling China knows Hong Kong will never be as rich and prosperous again. They have lots of big cities.

China passing a law for another independent state is pointless.

When Clinton was elected the Chinese were still in medieval times to a very large degree.

I happened to see the very first PRC booth in the CES show--January 1994 IIRC. Their high tech item was a UHF TV set. Bill Clinton GAVE them supercomputer technology. Even at that, it took a good ten years for them to make serious headway. Without the Clintons help, China would still be 30 years behind.
