On a Twitter account recently: Happened in Florida! * Have a friend who went to get tested at a drive thru with her kid. Registered to take test. Got sick of waiting and left. Few days later got a call they were both positive. They never even took the test...The numbers are a lie!! Here's another on the same Twitter account: * I live in TX. I know of a firefighter who tested positive for COVID in March. 2 weeks later, symptoms gone. Needed negative test to return to work. After 6 tests, still shows positive. After each test, he gets call from CDC with survey. Last call he asked if each positive test is counted as a new case, they said YES. 1 person= 7 new cases Here's another: * Saw this also happened to someone that scheduled appt for test at CVS. They didn’t go. Several days later got positive test results in mail after never being tested. One more: * I heard this from someone else who registered to take the test but never had it done, but received "results" in the mail that said she was positive for COVID. Tulsa City-County Health Department Director Bruce Dart during a Wednesday press conference attributed the increase in new cases over the past two days to the rally and the associated protests. On Monday, the county identified 261 new cases, the highest daily increase during the pandemic, and on Tuesday, officials confirmed 206 new cases, he said. “In the past two days, we’ve had almost 500 new cases, and we knew we had several large events a little over two weeks ago, which is about right, so I guess we just connect the dots,” Dart said. Anonymous Coward User ID: 76555400 Canada 07/08/2020 08:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | An obvious point: large gatherings of people facilitate spread of contagious disease. The *reason* for the gathering (whether street protests, or GOP convention, or a sporting event) is not material to the spread of the virus. At a *minumum,* such gatherings should involve harm reduction techniques (such as masks, no tear gas, no shouting, etc.). Also, transmission opportunities rise supra-linearly with group size. So gathering of 250,000 people >>worse than 50,000 >>>>worse than 30 people. Recall that Trump's rally made no attempts to reduce risk. The Philadelphia Liberty Loans Parade noted above took place on Sept 28, 1918 (to sell bonds for WW1) and >200,000 people attended. This led to one of the largest outbreaks of flu in USA. It has been called "the deadliest parade in American history." It’s not just about protestors (or anyone joining any kind of large gathering) willingly assuming risk to their *own* lives from a contagious disease. It’s that, during an outbreak, their actions impose risk on *others* including most vulnerable. Think about them. |
