Whoa! My town made it to GLP!!!

I can easily see this fire from my front yard. Things seemed to have died down quite a bit but there are sections that are still burning. At its peak there was lots of smoke. There were two helicopters dropping water on the fire - a smaller single rotor copter and a huge "chinook-styled twin rotor machine. There was also a large multi-engine jet aircraft that was dropping a red-colored powder on the fire.

It's "Canon" City, not "Canyon" City. I'm so tired of spelling-tard OP's who can't even correctly spell the words that are in the headlines of the news articles that they're linking to. All you have to do is COPY what's in the news headline that someone else already spelled correctly for you. COPY!

The city is surrounded by canyons you know.

Deadliest fire in U.S. history was in Northeastern Wisconsin. Peshtigo Fire. Look it up. Started the same night as the "Great Chicago Fire." Fires also raged in the Michigan side of the lake.

Supposedly back in the early days of this town it was, in fact, named Canyon City primarily due to its proximity to the huge and very deep Royal Gorge Canyon which is just to the NW of town - location of the second highest suspension bridge in the world.

However, in writing an article about this new town some Mexican journalist spelled the name of the town as Cañon City where the n had that sideways "s" (whatever you call that thing) above it as that's the way the word "canyon" would be written in Spanish. Well, ever since then that has been the "official" spelling of the name of this town however some people spell the name as simply Canon City with no squiggle above the n.

By the way, Cañon City is a wonderful smallish town in south-central Colorado that you might enjoy visiting some day. The people here are great and, for the most part, rather conservative. There are tons of things to do in this town - white water rafting, fishing in the Arkansas River, Royal Gorge Scenic Railroad, Royal Gorge suspension bridge, Zip-lining, helicopter rides, walking trails and bike paths, rock climbing, museums, winery, Segway and Jeep touring,,, to name a few.

Another historical note about Cañon City. Back in the days of silent movies a ton of movies were filmed here including many that starred the icon Tom Mix. Should you ever visit this town be sure to check out the two-cell jail in Prospect Heights" where legend has it that Tom Mix ended up spending the night sleeping off a drunk after a wild night of "celebrating". More recent movies filmed in the area have starred John Wayne, Robert Redford, Jane Fonda (AKA Hanoi Jane)and others. There is a scene in Atlas Shrugged (Part 1) that was filmed here.
