Boaters, tell me about it, cost, fun, lifestyle

I work on the water so I get all of the boating I need on someone else's dime. I don't really see the attraction that people have for it honestly but then again I work on the water for a living. I do want to get one though but thats a pontoon boat for fishing and outings.

Just bought a deck boat yesterday. Don’t care if it’s a money pit. I’ve always loved boating. It’s really great to invite families up with you and let the kids go wild. Everyone has a blast.

1970's I used to drink beer with the cop boat because I got to know them.
Now they are like Nazis dressed in black ninja unis and they will cuff you and take you boat if you drink a 6 pack.
Flip side is evey asshole has an overpowered boat they have no clue how to drive plus they drink.
Now I stay on the beach and surf fish.
Drink a few cold ones.
Much safer and cheaper.
I go on a party boat and fish the ocean in the fall.

If u don't want to mess with a trailer get an American made Sportspal canoe, 14' with a motor mount. After removing the front seat it weighs in at around 55lb. 36" wide at center and is almost impossible to tip over.

I use a 30lb thrust Minka motor with deep cycle battery. will out run anything with 55lb thrust and will turn on a dime with one person in it. great for fishing or hunting. pricey but will last a lifetime.

Too much trouble and there's always that unknown water factor. I'll buy an RV. Hallelujah.

If you have basic mechanical aptitude an inboard boat isn't that bad but an outboard can be hellish requires a lot of special knowledge.

You have to watch that prop constantly.


You need at least one, and usdually a couple of people to go with you usually if you are skiing.

Boats can be quite dangerous if you aren't extremely careful. You have to pretend it is like toting a running chainsaw around. And others are toting their own running chainsaw around you - and odds are good they are probably drinking!

Boats are a blast when you are young and pretty pointless as you age unless you have kids to drag around.

A boat has to be stored and winterized without fail or the whole thing rapidly breaks down, crack the block in the winter, etc.

depending on where you live you may only get a handful of months of use out of them every year. You won't go near as often as you initially plan to.

You have to license the boat and trailer. You may have to have an exam to operate one in your state.

The boating experience is not for poor people that is for sure but it isn't terrible if you get a good condition used one.

This actually isn’t true if you can find decent mooring rates and do most of the work yourself. But yes they will shaft you any way they can for boat work, it’s 5x worse than car mechanics. Some work like propeller balancing can’t be diy and they charge out the ass for it
