If you test a hundred people and 10 are positive, then you have a 10% POSITIVE RATE. If you test 200 people and 50 are positive, then you have a 25% POSITIVE RATE, which is an increase in both the number of tests and the number of cases. So it's not the total number of positive tests, but rather the rate at which people are testing positive. That number is increasing in many states.
So while it looks like the mortality rate may be decreasing, thankfully, your point about more people being tested causing the rise in cases is foolish and couldn't be more wrong. This is just 3rd grade level arithmetic. Hope this helps.

The death rate is higher than the flu (almost twice the rate) and since it's infection rate is MUCH HIGHER than the flu, somewhere around 5%, it is a concern to a lot of people who have co morbidity and who have grandparents and parents they actually care about. Many young people are shopping for their 80 year old grandma, and God bless them that are, because it is too risky for granny to go out in public.

Heck even my young daughter who hasn't had an asthma attack since a child caught this and she recounted her experience with this. Healthy girl other than childhood asthma. She said she hasn't experience so much anxiety about not being able to breathe since she was a child. Would wake up at night unable to breath. This went on for almost two weeks and she had the cough and taste, smell issue also. Luckily she still had an inhaler with her even though she hadn't had to use it in over 10 years.

Any psychologist knows it only takes 3 days of isolation for someone not used to it to go insane, full delusions filled with rage.

Just a quick point, the idea that a mask is like trying to stopping a mosquito going thru a chain link fence is a poor analogy. The virus is carried in droplets. So a mask is more like an umbrella trying to stop the rain. It works but you still can get splashed by the wind.

Some have speculated that we now suffer from a new and less virulent mutation of the sars cov 2. It could also be speculated that while we are experiencing the same deadly virus that afflicted New York, we in the northern hemisphere, are confronting the virus with a generous load of vitamin d, thanks to the long hours of sunlight in these summer months.

Look at the worldometer line graph of the deaths and how it dropped since April as the days grew longer. Keep watching that graph like a hawk as we get past September and into October as the daylight hours decrease. Watch for the infection point in the line if/when the death rate increases. When that happens, you will know. The window of opportunity will close very quickly at that time.

I fear the death rate will grow exponentially along with the new cases. But this time there will be multiple "New Yorks" in multiple States and Provinces.
