Who knows if there was actually oil in the barrel

They said the explosion came from a 55 gallon oil barrel but its probable it was a 55 gallon barrel with solvents in it.

What compartments would those be? HALON Fire suppression systems in boiler and machinery rooms yea but shut off air? Never heard of that. You can turn off individual fan rooms to decrease airflow but they are manual.

Two fire crews are inside the ship and some ladder trucks are spraying from dock side

I'm confident that thing is completely out by now and the ship's damage control is at stage 3. which was dewatering compartments on our ship. They've already assessed damage at stage2
1. contain/control damage
2. assess damage
3. dewatering compartments
4.Complete and submit for review The after action report which is mandatory as it will be used by the board to help determine root cause and if captain will suffer removal of his command.

Doubt the captain was on board.. highly doubt he will be disciplined unless there was a coverup of lack of required maintenance or something like that.

like was said ...to be fair, he's not getting a pic of fire. (I'm guessing they are on the 'silver strand' boardwalk across the bay, having a good time and he probably never saw the smoke till later if someone was implying they were giddy about it which appears she was.

I imagine that the ship will basically have to be largly rebuilt "IF" is to ever sail again. A minimum of 2 years, probably 3 to 4 years to make it deployable again.

It may be easier and cheaper for the Navy to just construct an entirely new ship, not much difference in the time to get an entirely new one deployed, than to try to rebuild this one.

Sad ... but you have to wonder why they couldn't contain the fire to a small area even though the ship was in dock undergoing maintenance.

No evidence yet to speculate like that. For all we know there might have been multiple fires and one was contained whiles other wasn't. I'd give it a few days at least, for the steel to cool and some explanation attempted before speculating.

Also my god we have a horrific smell now. Chemical, bleachy, something.. I am 14 miles from there.

Really sucks after a 100+ tempurature day to close everything and turn off air..

Son just said it's east county, SDSU area, and Rolando area complaining on twitter of this smell. That is a HUGE area.

oh shit.. Fire department just went by.

I was busy making fajitas so just now am noticing this.

This is a POWERFUL smell. If it is this bad here, and it's the ship.. What the hell.

It's everywhere in San Diego it seems. Truly horrific smell. Seriously worse than the HUGE fires we had.

I was gonna suggest halon from the fire suppressant on board the ship as a possible cause but halon is orderless. Have no idea if they used other chemicals except firefighting foam maybe. No telling what the civilian firefighters brought.
The only other idea was from when I lived up north in Morgan Hill. Every year this time of year the garlic blooms and is pungent, especially in the mornings as it sinks near the ground.. Any garlic fields around?
