Navy Ship On FIRE!

Thank you. Nothing official, maybe the 10pm news. But nothing from police or fire. It's unbearable outside. It seems to be county wide, the winds must have shifted a bit more, or fire reached something new. I have no idea!!



WOW, ok that is weird! It is truly overpowering here. Seems like La Mesa, Rolando, SDSU, East County, etc are the mentions on twitter.
Yeah, little miss dictator is north county. I am more east county.


Now 20 miles people are smelling it.

Terrible burning chemical smell outside tonight in #SanDiego #District7. Hearing it’s from the Navy ship burning and it’s terrible. Instant headache. Can’t be healthy.

Navy (via news JUST NOW) says it is non toxic.

uh, it smells toxic. lol

But I suppose if it was a serious danger we would get a shelter in place order.

My son said he could smell it inside, I can't yet.

wow news just said smoke will be here for DAYS!!

Halon a long time ago was super dangerous as it bound up the oxygen to starve the fire (fire needs a spark, fuel, and oxygen), but could suffocate people in the area.

I'm surprised it's still burning.

August 2nd 1988

USS CONSTELLATION suffers an engine room fire which forces the carrier to cancel scheduled operations and return to San Diego, Calif. The fire, believed to be caused by a fuel oil leak, begins with an explosion in one of the ship's four engine rooms around noon and is finally extinguished about 9 hours later after several subsequent explosions caused by heat from the initial fire. 20 sailors suffer burns, bruises, and smoke inhalation .


The real story was flight operations continued Until they figured it out what was actually happening.

Only took them nine hours back when...Pray for our new navy in port with unlimited resources to fight fires.

The story was contractors were working on the main decks fuel lines in port prior to the ship leaving and going up in flames.

Seems the civilian contractors forgot which pipe was what and had crossed a fuel line with a vent pipe.
So when an aircraft refueled it would dump even more fuel into the engine compartment.

Look at the civies work in port for the reason.

Due to the ship fire burning in San Diego harbor, localized areas of smoke have occurred in areas of San Diego County. As a result fine particulates, or PM2.5 concentrations, may reach unhealthful levels in some smoke impacted areas.

In areas of heavy smoke, assume that air quality levels are unhealthy for sensitive groups to unhealthy for all individuals. In areas with minor smoke impacts, assume that air quality levels range from moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups.

In areas where you smell smoke it is advised that you limit physical activity. If possible, stay indoors to limit your exposure to fine particulate matter.

cant find a link but my uncle told me its probly full of nukular bombs which will explodiate from being on fire. so that could be a problem

Listening to maritime vhf channel 10.. For anyone local, yu should be listening in.. This is crazy, you can hear them trying to plan what to do.

Mast could go.. Superstructure is now burning.. Air drops, huge fire down below deck, and they can see down 2 decks.

My son is streaming it, but we'll probably go to bed soon, so it may not be on long.

No nukes according to news earlier. But they were quite worried about the superstructure on top, and now it's burning. They are also worried the mast is gonna go..

I should mention, he is monitoring 3 stations, so you will hear the others also. Channel 16 international distress, and another one they were on earlier before they changed to 10.

They have stopped for the night, but my son is going to replay the last hour, for any interested.

basically they always lie about the nukular weapons. so they said it dont have nukular weapons that really means it a hunnert per sent has nukular weapons!!! if sandy aygo disappears in a big flash of light then everybody will know they were lying!

its not a new ship at least, they are being replaced by the America class.

They should investigate this thoroughly and see if they can implement any design changes for the America class that would help mitigate a fire like this.

Looking for evidence that China hack or A I did this.
If we allowed China to make widgets that go into machinery.... it happened in a hold with a lot of vehicles and machinery around.
Anyone have any idea if this could have been sparked by a computer hack or A I?

Interesting, they hadn't finished dewatering by 0430 as Dewatering will get rid of list. They must have been fighting the fire longer into the night than I initially thought, although they could have been over zealous in trying to keep steel cool and thereby used too much water causing list.

Right. If the ship can’t handle a fire started by a welding torch without destroying the whole ship, how would it be able to sustain even mild battle damage.

spots? Are you looking at a map of known fires? I can assure you, there are no two naval ships on fire in Nevada and someone said yesterday Israel bombed/another facility in Iran, so that might account for that fire.

I haven't gone outside to see how the smell is. After doing so last night, I had a lingering metalic taste in mouth.. Creepy.

By the way, the original Bonhomme Richard was named as a tribute to Benjamin Franklin. "Bonhomme Richard" is French for "Good man Richard," the French take on "Poor Richard," Ben Franklin's almanac.

I believe the old Bonhomme Richard was the first ship to receive a salute from a Navy ship of another country. The French fired a cannon salute, thus recognizing the U.S. as a country.

But then again, it was probably more about giving the British the finger than anything else.

I wonder what they will say the source of the fire was. Interesting that the modern ship named for the one that got the U.S. recognition is on fire today.

I can't believe the thing is still burning. This is a full on conflagration. Might be easier and cheaper to scuttle it at this point as I'm not sure helicopter bucket drops will do much good from the outside besides cooling steel.

I opened my backdoor for just a moment, and the smell is so severe it felt like it burned my nose.

No idea how I will get out to water the garden. It's not just a light smell, it is overpowering like the fire is right outside my door!

Try putting Vicks on your upper lip and wear a mask. Maybe wait until tonight and check again? It can't be good breathing this stuff. I'd have a massive asthma attack.

On the maritime vhf channel last night, they were talking about just letting it burn it's self out. But I believe they are doing such major drops because of the air quality. It's truly unreal out here in the east county. Apparently it's hitting some areas worse than others. We seem to be getting the absolute worst of it.

This shows the path through yesterday 6pm, but it honestly smells worse now than it did last night.

I might try my paint respirator. Yesterday hit over 100, and it's already 92 out there. Corn and cucumbers are probably feeling rather desperate. Shame I haven't gotten my drip system going yet. lol
