One of my kids works in a busy grocery store as a cashier, bagger, and cart pusher. He touches all the items from every shopper plus touches the handles on their carts. My brother works in a different busy store from the same chain but in the grocery department. My sister works for a department store as a cashier. Yes, they have hand sanitizer at every register and they spray down the carts, but these are still high risk occupations.

None of them know a single fellow employee who has contracted the virus. This is anecdotal, I know, but these are still good indicators of how pervasive something is.

I have wondered the same thing! If anyone is close to others, it's them! ! On a typical day, flight attendants could be in close contact, on a plane, with at least 250-400 people.

I just checked a typical day for a flight attendant flying out of Newark to San Francisco for tomorrow, July 14th.
There are non-stop flights, but some flight attendants might also do this:

EWR (Newark)-ORD (Chicago) 6:50am-8:13am, United flight 1071.
So far, there are 115 passengers booked on the 2 hr 23 min flight.

ORD-SFO (San Francisco) 9:14am , United flight 1952
So far, there are 108 passengers booked on the 4 hr 45 min flight.

Therefore, the flight attendants will be exposed to 223 passengers on both of those flights.

They will also be exposed to passengers, security personnel, food service workers at Newark Airport, Chicago Airport, and people in their assigned hotel van from SFO Airport to their hotel. They will be staying at a layover hotel in SFO, eating at restaurants in SFO, and possibly taking walks or shopping in SFO. They will work one or more flights on July 15th before returning to their home base, Newark.


Another flight tomorrow: United 2380, San Fran to Honolulu
Duration 5 hr 16 min
241 passengers are booked on a 777-200.
