Re: I’d bet my life inheritance of $500,000 that the earth is flat
How come you can’t stare at the sun during the day but you can during sunset. According to round earth, the sun is just as close to you at sunset as in the daytime. If that were true the light intensity would be the same. If the sun was merely moving away from you on a flat earth, the low wind light intensity of a sunset would make sense.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79134940

Because the Sun you see at sunset has already past the horizon.
What you see at sunset is the refracted light of the sun because of the curvature.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Quoting: Pinkorchid- Covfefe

So how come when a cloud only partially covers the sun, the uncovered part of the sun still has the same intensity? Even if the earth is covering a part of the sun, the other part should still have the same intensity.

You can wave your arms all you want, but it's a simple fact that if you travel west, the Sun sets later, and if you travel east, the Sun sets earlier. Anyone who's traveled a couple of thousand miles east or west on a plane can verify this for themselves.

What I'm saying in general is that the spherical Earth theory makes numerous predictions, all of which are borne out in experience. The flat Earth theory can match those predictions, but they have to come up with all sorts of special magical physics to make it happen, while with the spherical Earth it happens as a direct result of the geometry. Some examples of spherical Earth theory predictions:
- If you go farther north, the angle of the Pole Star will tell you exactly how far north you are.
- If you go south, you'll see stars that you can't see from farther north. If you go south far enough, you'll no longer be able to see northern stars at all.
- If you go west, the Sun will set later. If you go east, the Sun will set earlier.
- If you go far enough north in the summer, the Sun won't set at all. If you do it in the winter, you'll see the Sun disappear and not return for months.
 Quoting: ToSeek

Did you not create physics to make your argument? Why could I not make up physics to support my argument?

None of what you said proves the earth is not flat... you have created physics to explain the earth and sun rotations yet I can create a set of physics and apply them to flat earth theory and generate the same result. Why is yours correct and mine is incorrect?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73786357

There's no physics in my arguments (unless you want to call the assumption that light travels in straight lines physics). It's all simple geometry.

And, yes, you could come up with some sort of physics to explain how a flat Earth can look like a round Earth, but why complicate matters? Just go with the simplest explanation - unless, of course, you can find an observation that makes more sense with a flat Earth than a round one. But I'm not aware of any of those.
 Quoting: ToSeek

Because it “may” not be the truth... that’s why.. why would I just choose to believe a lie? Because it’s easier?

If I can create physics to explain flat earth, then surly it’s possible... and if it’s possible, then it shouldnt be just immediately discredited and ignored..

I started on this when I learned Galileo was persecuted for what he said. I can point out many times in history when leaders persecuted the truth, because it didn’t fit their narrative.

One could argue this is happening right now in current events..

I’m not saying one or the other. I had an awakening where nothing I feel I was taught is truth. I know nothing...

You make compelling arguments and surely it’s easier to argue it’s a sphere. I’m not looking for easy, I’m looking for the truth.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73786357

Occam's Razor. The simplest solution is almost always the correct one. And you don't do science by deciding the way things are (flat Earth) and then making up physics around your conclusion solely to justify it. You make observations and come to conclusions based on what the observations tell you. And every observation I can think of indicates that the Earth is spherical.

I’ve taken many airplane rides and none has ever done anything to convince me that we live on a globe.

Ever had to reset your watch because you changed time zones? That's clearly evidence for a round earth.
 Quoting: ToSeek

Dude time zones are MAN made rofl
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3095039

True, but they reflect the reality that the Sun rises roughly an hour later in Chicago than it does in New York City. As I note elsewhere, if you fly from New York to Los Angeles (at this time of year) and don't change your watch, you'll be confused because suddenly the Sun is rising around 9 am and setting around midnight.

The atmosphere scatters sunlight. If the Sun is overhead, it's only going through about five miles of significant atmosphere. At sunrise or sunset it's going through more like a hundred miles of atmosphere, so much of it gets redirected (particularly the shorter wavelengths, which is why the setting sun tends to be reddish).

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78617574

I've said it several times before, but here we go again:

- If you travel east, the Sun rises earlier. If you travel west, it rises later.
- If you travel north, the Pole Star moves higher in the sky at the exact same rate you move north - you can calculate your latitude directly from the position of Polaris.
- If you travel south, you see stars you can't see from farther north. If you travel far enough south, you can't see northern stars any more.
- If you travel far enough north, you get to a point where in the summer the Sun ever sets and in the winter it never rises.

All of these are obvious results of the geometry of a spinning, spherical Earth. There's no way of getting these same observations from a flat Earth without some sort of weird magical physics that conveniently makes a flat Earth look exactly like a round Earth.
