Music from another reality: 80s remixes of contemporary songs

This one I don't even think is a good song in its original form. This 80s remix is outstanding though.

I don't have anything really to add...but this is a cool thread and I'd like to see more submissions to it. It's a nice break from the doom...

This is my personal favorite of these. The original is an average pop song, but this remix is amazing.

What can we learn from this thread?

Contemporary pop music is excellent at its core. It just may be the style of music that isn't as good anymore.

This one is a trip. This is really 70s through today all mixed together.

That is so good. That would be remembered as an all-time classic if it had been released in the 80s. I can't think of an 80s pop song that good at the moment.

That one sounds to me like a cheap riff off of the 80s sound which might be what you were going for.

I think that's an example of a forgettable 80s song. Hearing that once is enough for me whereas the other remixes in this thread will be listened to by me a lot more.

Unfortunately, they still have the contemporary chord progressions.

You can put 80's synth into it, but it still has the same weird progressions and bizarre cadence.

Bizarre cadence? Which one do you think that applies to?

Here's an 80s song that sounds modern to me: "I am the City" by Abba. I think cadence is more bizarre on this song than any of the remixes posted in this thread. Could you be more specific about what you mean by "bizarre cadence"?

Even if you're completely right, what's the problem?

I think blending different styles is really interesting and enjoyable. It's a new type of creativity that wasn't possible before.

I just realized that the remixes in this thread sound a lot like Bjork's music in the 90s.

I knew she was ahead of her time.

I just picked a song at random, and that's a bad example because Bjork is screaming through half of it and hardly singing at all.

Now THAT is a bizarre cadence. That's Mariah Carey-level impossible to match. The 90s were the glory years for bizarre cadences.

Which part are you disagreeing with?

Take Mariah Carey's song "Emotions" for instance. It's been said she's the only person who can sing it properly.

That is perfect 80s. Ariana Grande is so perfect as an apparent 80s artist that the comments for her 80s remix videos are full memories and stories from alternate realities.

I don't know how to describe it. It is not melodic like most music before the early 90's. Even folk music.

A music expert could probably explain the difference. All I know is I can hear it.

I think it's like this. Madonna released "True Blue" as a single in the 80s when she was probably the biggest female pop star in the world. The song is meant to be a tribute to 50s music. It's done completely in that style, and it was a huge hit. Nothing like that could happen today. I think it was possible in the 80s because pop music hadn't changed that much since the 50s in some ways.
