I've been screaming about China and some of the Middle Eastern countries for years. I KNOW that they are bringing in pledges with grad students. All the STEM grad students compete against each other for a certain number of PhD slots. The research universities provide a certain amount of stipend positions (normally about $26K or so) to grad students. But when it comes to getting the PhD slots, the universities want the money (donations) that the Chinese (or whatever) students bring with them if they are admitted. The US students only cost them money in free classes and stipends. The universities will provide the test questions/answers ahead of time to the foreign students (sometimes outright fraud and sometimes through "tutors") so that they score higher than the US students, and then get the PhD slots while the US students get axed and sent away. Some of the students can barely even speak English, but they are writing "better" essays and scoring higher on the exams? The universities keep a small amount of US students in the program for if they have government projects which require that. In short, we are educating these foreign students who then steal our latest technologies, and the universities don't give a crap because they received their huge donations/pledges and can continue doing research for another year or two.

Then businesses say that they have to hire the Chinese VISA holders because there aren't enough US students who are interested in getting PhDs. That is total BS - the universities stack the deck against their own for the $$$. My daughter and her husband are both PhDs in engineering. They went to a premier-tier university and they would have some pretty wild stories. The university research faculty would also try to get them to fudge data on their research so that the results would be more beneficial to extend their grant money. Everything always revolves around the money.
