Har, har, har... the NYT wants to end blind auditions in classical music to favor blacks
The paper's classicial music critic, Anthony Tommasini, writes today that starting in 1969, the NY Phil began to audition musicians behind a screen so that they would be judged purely on their skill and artistry.

Back then, only 6 percent of the orchestra's members were women. Now, nearly half are female. They proved they could do the job.

But at present, only one musician, clarinetist Anthony McGill of Chicago, is black.

Tommasini calls on the orchestra to end blind auditions because he finds watching the almost all-white orchestra "unbelievably depressing."

Nobody should be surprised that in the brave new world to come, listening to the music probably won't be part of going to the NY Philharmonic.

There was already a posted thread about this yesterday.

That said, this is extremely racist of the NY Times writer. Since they are blind auditions, he is implying that Blacks do not perform as well and this need a visual reminder to select the performer based upon his melanin.

In other words, blacks have proven they couldn't do the job.

Next.

It's not really a racial thing because there are so few black musicians in the classical music scene to start with. It would be hard to create an orchestra with 13% of the musicians identifying as black, something obviously overlooked by the NY Times. They are probably over-represented as a racial demographic in the jazz scene.

Its important that we discontinue judging people on their abilities in favor of judging them by their skin color.

unbelievable.
