You need a beginning, a middle and an end, with lots of 'hooks' in between.

Re: How do you write a book?
The radio comes to life, some classic rock song, forgettable but familiar. Gotta get moving if I want to beat the traffic. Where did I throw my keys. There they are. Now, if I can just avoid the land lady. Shit. I can hear her stomping up the stairs. All hell will break loose when she sees the renovation project. No choice. It had to be done.

Re: How do you write a book?
If you have or haven't written a book, I'd like to hear your methods.

How do you take story ideas and complete them?

>brainstorm
>write (effort -> results)
>edit (patiently)
>an ending creates conditions, like a math equation solved backwards
>ask for help
>meme on the normies
>tell emotions through reactions
>tell motivations through actions

Will add as we go, thank you.

Re: How do you write a book?
In a few short paragraphs it is possible to establish multiple settings and characters and set in motion a variety of mysteries that flesh out the universe. I just threw out a few examples, nothing that great or anything just to illustrate. Every sentence or detail can initiate multiple questions and lines of potential elaboration. I have no idea where this story is heading. But there are numerous elements within a realistically established setting where new lines of narrative can develop - Questions to answer if the overall narrative needs it. What is the package that is arriving. What were the couple arguing about. Where is the absent girlfriend character and what is her obsession about. What is the renovation and why was it necessary. Why is the main character in a hurry and what is he trying to accomplish. What is the issue with the land lady. etc etc.

Re: How do you write a book?
You can practice the craft in every post here. Some people suggest not to tell a story but describe the actions that reveal inner motivations. You can get very experimental shifting from one point of view to any of a number of others within the same narrative. Within this communication of words and letter, there is you, the reader, me the writer, any characters we choose to introduce within the narrative and several meta points of view that exist or develop as the story develops. Each new character has internal conflicts and dialogues and stories composing the universe of his or her motivation. How deep does a story delve into all those details. Are characters a means to an end or plot devices or should they all be developed in depth so each emotion each interaction is understood complexly. A character could take a book off the shelf as simply as that. Or the character could hesitate, run their fingers along the spine remember a conversation from long ago, sigh and take a drink of wine. Elaborations of detail in action can develop the complexity of the internal emotional states of the characters, introducing new plot points or new characters within the internal narrative of their story.

And paragraphs. Don’t forget paragraphs.

Re: How do you write a book?
A professional novelist once told me the difference between a professional novelist and an amateur writer that dreams about one day becoming a professional novelist, is that a professional novelist spends his days writing novels.

I honestly think this is the only advice you need.
