When my tooth was bothering me (old filling, I suspected it was getting infected inside) my wife recommended tea tree oil to disinfect, and clove oil to numb the pain. It sounds like you tried the clove oil- try applying tea tree oil with a q-tip. Tastes gross, but I noticed an immediate improvement.
