You have to have cells that permit the exchange of gasses. If they are dead, it won't be happening. Until those cells heal themselves no ventilator will work. The next step would be a heart/lung machine. As I see it, the only reason why they're using a ventilator is that they are cheaper than a heart/lung machine.
