interesting way to deal with the increasing craziness we're moving in to
Most of my life I’ve been looking for relief from the pain, anxiety and frustration of living in this bizarre, challenging world. I’ve had a lot of time to think about it (i'm 70 now) and explore different psychological and spiritual modalities - most of which end up being long on promises but short on any lasting results.

Last week, I found myself watching/listening to this guy Robert Salzman on youtube. Right away i perked up because his ideas are so unique, out-of-the-box and refreshing.

If you're at all interested in a new perspective that could lighten your load and lower your anxiety level, you might consider taking a few minutes to listen to this guy.
Start at about 4 minutes and see if you resonate with what he’s talking about.

(i know he looks a little bit like the crazy professor from Back to the Future, but he's the most intelligent, clear thinking, good-hearted person i've heard in a long time)

Robert Salzman also wrote a book called: The Ten Thousand Things(quotes below). If you watched the video and liked it, you’ll probably enjoy the book.

About this thread: I’ll be posting quotes from Salzman’s books and links to his talks.

Bottom line for me: by applying some of these ideas, i've already started to notice that i'm stressing less and feeling more at peace with being in this body.

“For me, an apparent personal self is still present, but has lost the authority of its judgments, certainties and pet beliefs. Gone too is the usual intense identification with personal history and autobiography as if one owned the past, or at least one’s little piece of it. I don’t mean that I cannot remember erstwhile experiences, but that they have lost their power to affect and condition the present. If I speak of bygones, it feels as if speaking about someone else entirely.”

“Without its certainties and habitual attachment to self-fulfillment, and self-justification, the personal self has nowhere very solid to perch. If there is anger, it lasts only a moment. If there is lust, it lasts only for a moment. Such feelings are neither rationalized and explained by reference to the past, nor sustained by weaving them into a story one imagines will continue onward into a visualized future. For me, feelings are not connected up in that way. One really does live at all times only here and now, not by choice, but just because that’s the way it is."

“To put this in simplest terms, so far as any of us knows, no one is making this stream of consciousness—the river of perceptions, feelings, and thoughts that in each moment is “myself.” You can tell yourself that “God” is making that stream, but hanging a name on the incomprehensible does nothing to explicate or illuminate the actual, front-and-center mystery of aliveness—the astounding fact of being at all, prior to concepts about the supposed source of this aliveness.”

“Whether a supreme being exists or not is beside the point anyway. Regardless of what you believe or disbelieve, undeniably, here you are. Each moment is unique in its suchness—its essential character—come and gone like a lightning flash. Who knows what, if anything, is creating that suchness? We are here without knowing. Each moment is what it is when it is, isn’t it?

In awakening, one sees that concepts about ultimate matters are only passing thoughts in changeful human minds, not “Truth.”

I have not a flyspeck of interest in beliefs, conjectures, or faith of any stripe, not because one belief or another has been proven wrong or because I am an atheist or a materialist, but because this moment is sufficient unto itself without my needing to believe anything.

Like any other person I have a story and a personality, not chosen, but imposed by nature and nurture. It is what it is. No one is to blame, and I’m not judging.

He seems to be doing formless yoga, like Advaita, or Zen, ... Can't say that he is correct in negating other types of paths, but in that it may appeal to certain mental compositions that otherwise would not be attracted, which is good thing.

But saying a devotional path for example, does not bring the present realization of which he speaks, does not pass. The fruits of such things cannot be defined by the means.

Thanks for your feedback. I guess the main problematic issue with a devotional path is that the devotee, by definition, sets him or her self apart from (and less than) the object of devotion.

This is only true for Caucasians. Caucasians don't have free will because they don't have spirits. They just animals. So squirrels don't have free will, racoons don't either. Nor do Caucasians. Because they're all just animals. But brothas have free will because we have actual spirits. Just like if you playin' a video game. The person playing the game can do whatever they want, they can kill all the villagers, complete quests out of order, go to any town. But the "NPCs" in the game can't do anything other than their prescripted behavior.

As Shen Hui said, awakening is not gradual, but sudden, instantaneous. It is not about practice. All at once you see that you are not doing anything. Not deciding anything. Not choosing anything. There is no such choosing/deciding “myself” except in fantasy.

Whatever you feel, think, and see is you. There is no choice in the matter—no escaping you. That is what I mean by the word “awakening”—a sudden awareness, quite undeniable, that everything you see, feel, and think is you.
