We use the Gregorian calendar for now during the transitional phase. If you look at the current plan it is for doing the date transition in July 2023. There is no good reason for humanity to not move into something more modern and better.

I noticed that Los Angeles was going to open public schools on Aug 18 but then called it off.

I wonder if they were trying to use the New Jerusalem Calendar because the New Jerusalem Calendar has the public school system start on Aug 18. But the Gregorian and New Jerusalem are two different calendars.

We would have to do a conversion month with everyone knowing about it in order to do it.

Like even if they adjusted the date to July 16, 2020 (5/16/2020) today and went with the New Jerusalem Calendar then they could use the public school system that comes with it and open on Aug 18.
