The old folks did not have any high tech at the time. Quote: Virgil I. Grissom and John W. Young entered an elliptical orbit about the earth. After three orbits, the pair manually landed their spacecraft in the Atlantic Ocean, thus performing the first controlled reentry. Unfortunately, they landed much farther from the landing zone than anticipated, about 97 km (60 miles) from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid. But otherwise the mission was highly successful. Gemini III, America's first two-manned space mission, also was the first manned vehicle that was maneuverable. Grissom used the vehicle's maneuvering rockets to effect orbital and plane changes. -50% [link to www.astronautix.com] Same Same. The old guys did it without any high tech. I came. I saw. I Concorde. For once you have tasted Concorde you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return. This is being done with more precision and with fewer assets needed for recovery. In fact the recovery boat is a privately owned vessel. A private company did this. This is a huge development and one you previously claimed they would never pull off. |

Maybe he is there in Pensacola and he was filming the capsule entry, who knows? I wish I could have, but it would have required 14 hours of driving plus stops and setup teardown time. Just wasn't practical this time. If they do Tampa or the cape next time I'll be there. |

There are obviously private spectators watching this, guess those are paid shills too? This is a HUGE day for America's space program. The completion of this mission essentially severs our dependence on Russia for transportation to and from the ISS. Astro, do you know if ULA is still purchasing RD-180's from russia or has the replacement from Blue Origin been certified? |

It was Obama and Charles Boldren who made the decision to privatize Space if my memory serves me right. NASA passed all the knowledge to the people at Space X or whatever name they had at the time. Gemini 3 was 55 years ago. You probably wasn't even born back in 1965. I was geeked since Sputnik flight, then Laika and even more with Yuri and Valentina. It was incredible what they had accomplished at the time. I loved them Soviet Cosmonauts. I had the chance to meet a few in person at the MAKS Air and Space show at Zhukovsky near Moscow. I met with Buzz Aldrin in person and the then wife in Monte Carlo. Unexpectedly. I also have attended a fair number of Space Shuttle launches with and without launch scrubs including the 3 final launches. I would not change my age and experience for anything in the world. We lived some fabulous years. Privatization of Space? Meh. Orion and the SLS will be a lot more interesting.... and the new Buran. I came. I saw. I Concorde.
