Have faith President Donald J Trump says things are going to be great SOON. Don't let fear guide your intentions. Prepare for the worst perhaps, if you are able to. However, keep confident and have hope.

We're in this predicament because demonrats insisted we suck the China tit for everything we needed.
 Quoting: ~Jazz~

Exactly. Covid brought the global supply chain to a screeching halt. It shouldn't be shocking that we're now dealing a lack of goods that were largely supplied by China.

Many didn't realize just how much of what we depend on for food, entertainment, technology, industry and medicine is supplied by China.

This is what happens when you base nearly your entire supply chain in another country and then have a worldwide disaster. As bad as it's been, we're honestly lucky that the crisis we have to deal with is a pandemic and not an all-out war.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71569647

Most of this problem is not because of the Chinese.
All the Chinese do and did is supplying you with cheap products you need every day. MUCH cheaper than anything made in the USA.

The problem is Trump. He started a tradewar with China. And the rest of the world more or less.

Again, this is only the beginning. Once China and other countries start their payback on the USA is when the pain will really begin. You didnt really believe that all this anti China bullshit was without consequences ? Because there will be consequences.

The Chinese outnumber you by 4:1 and have 10 IQ point advantage. Ask Elon Musk about China.

Trump is picking an enemy he cannot defeat and whom, when provoked, will crush the USA. Dont forget Korea, Vietnam. You lost to china there too.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77750782

We have Jws, whom the Chinese don't have. Jws beat the Chinese on IQ on the average. Of course there are other bright Americans who are not Jws. But try to imagine the Manhattan Project without Jws.

There are terrible Jws, and there are great Jws, and in between Jws. Jws are often successful in what they try to do, good or bad, because people with high IQ are often successful.

Don't cut off your schnoz to spite your face! If you don't respect Jws (in general of course), believe me the Chinese do.

Typical ... Never mind the actual shortages, let's just re-arrange shite left and right to keep up appearances ... Damn, where would they've learned all of that?

THAT's the state of everything in this bogus fucken' shit world. It's all becoming a giant farce, just like communism. What better nation to know what so fucking fake is, than the fucking Ching Chongs. They put more energy in faking shite and making it look genuine than producing something of modest quality.

I wish you all the very best for the coming 60 years of brutal kafkaesque insanity and soul-crushing totalitarianism.

I know for a fact that only 25% of normal freight volumes are moving basically across the board.
 Quoting: yep 40907448

I live right near some train tracks, the trains mostly move freight, and I can tell you that I have heard many fewer trains than before the pandemic.

The Wall Street Journal had an article today about a guy that runs a bicycle shop. He’s in business and open BUT...there are no bicycles to sell (sorry about the paywall):

Personally I think our Government is hoarding this stuff for the Military. We have a Beef/Pork processing plant not to far from here. They are running 3 shifts 7 days a week but none of their Products are available here? So where's it going?

Same thing with Kellogg's plant here, upped production ( per my nephew that works there) but limited supplies here on the shelf.

While we rebuild our manufacturing in the USA, which can take years, even decades for certain industries, (but must be done), the US should reach out to other countries in our own backyard for partnership, Example: Mexico which has great steel foundries. Let's offer them the business. We should be honest that we are re-homing our manufacturing from China, it will take years to build up our own capability but that is our goal. However, in the meantime, we would like to give our neighbors in this hemisphere the business that China was getting from us. Lets boost them and ourselves up. Surely partnering with countries in Central & South America would be better than shipping half way around the world, and perhaps it would help to enhance our joint border control as well. Just thinking...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71236932

Also, all the climate change the left goes nuts about is mostly caused by shipping. Yet, they never want to stop, lessen, or even mention the shipping from china.

too much manufacturing in china - they sold us death in pet foods and baby toys .... their steel is shit, most things made in china break very quickly, like charging cables or even some appliances ... the ccp uses slave labor, they harvest organs from political prisoners, run over their own people with tanks

they cannot defeat us in any kind of war .... not that there is going to be a military war .... their own people do not trust or like the ccp unless they are the few who are at the top (which RIGHT THERE SHOWS people that it is NOT a communist country it is a brutal authoritarian OLIGARCHY)

there are other options beside china and the status quo that was ... people need to not fear and be positive about the now ... in every moment live in the positive and possible

All of these big retailers are going to start undertaking DRASTIC floor remodels that will adjust uprights and bays to occlude the fact that the shelves are emptying.
 Quoting: JimmyBones

I did see this today at Fred Meyer, a big box grocery/department store. The aisles were spaced a lot wider and they were shorter and there were fewer of them. And there were big empty spaces here and there where normally you would have seasonal display dumps. (could be between seasons).

In one big aisle on both sides they had filled the shelves with large plastic totes to fill the empty space.

One change I noticed in the stock mix was less camping and sporting goods, that's been true for a while, and more toys. I guess they're going with what sells to some extent. but they used to have a halfway decent camping department.

I've seen many threads on here about metal shortages. The Government is hoarding what's out there.

The reason I say this is because the Salvage yards and metal Recyclers are not paying top dollar.

Remember back in 2009/2010 ? Every truck and car was pulling a trailer full of scrap metal behind them to cash in.

Not happening now. There is no shortage Gov is stashing it away.

So, ordered a cheap $35.00 Bidet thru Amazon, an add-on model.

It came with a whole roll of Teflon sealant tape.

The T-fitting adapter was made of plastic. It Popped off in the middle of the night, flooding the floor.

Went to Lowes to get a new fitting, and the GENIUS employee there guffawed and said, "Hah, other people ordered that cheap set, and I told them to send it back to China"!

I then went to Ace Hardware, and another genius employee said just about the same thing with the same alacrity the other fool had.

Finally had to order a stainless steel T-Adapter (from Amazon), and now I can clean myself if TP is held hostage!

Shit is getting real down heah!

You're correct.
 Quoting: JimmyBones

I hate to see this happen, but we need to get away from China. Things will be lean for a while, but looking at this positively, this is an amazing business opportunity.

Find those items that are needed most and start a company in the US.

The only trouble is that the SBA loans are almost frozen right now. That needs to change. Uncle Sam needs to start pumping money into the manufacturing sector immediately! It's not just loans - it truly is investing in the future of the United States and National Security.

President Trump is already bring back existing large businesses, but we must start new manufacturing here as well.

Nickel Closest Thing to a True ‘War Metal’ – by Stan Sudol

This column was originally published in Northern Life, Greater Sudbury’s community newspaper on February 23, 2007

The metallic “Achilles heel” for any military and navel production has always been nickel

Sudbury was definitely going to be “nuked” by the Russians. At least that was our conclusion back in 1976 when I worked at CVRD Inco’s Clarabell Mill for a year.

During one graveyard shift, a group of us were talking about Cold War politics and atomic bombs. We all agreed that if there ever was a nuclear war between the Americans and Russians then there must have been one Soviet “nuke” with our community’s name stenciled on it. We all laughed a little nervously, but there was also some pride in knowing Sudbury was important enough to get blown-up in the first round of missiles.

Access to strategic materials has always affected the destinies of nations. The Romans conquered Britain in AD 43 to control valuable tin deposits in Cornwall. Combining tin with copper produces bronze, a more valuable and militarily important alloy. Ancient Chinese metallurgical expertise with iron and steel allowed the Middle Kingdom to become a dominate military and economic force during the prosperous Han dynasty.

I work on forklifts so I'm in a lot of warehouses.

Some food warehouses are getting low , others are jammed.

The economic shutdown has slowed the sales of some items and created shortaged of other items.

Theres no rhyme or reason to it.

Like there's a shortage of Gatorade and a massive oversupply of potato chips.

The shutdown created these huge distortions in supply and demand, changed peoples eating habits, and inventory levels are all over the place.

BTW Forklifts and the material handling industry are leading indicators, we always know what economy will be in 6 months.

We are the first thing industry cuts back on when their revenue drops, and the first thing they invest in when they are looking to expand.

We are swamped.

Sales , rentals and service numbers are way up.

It will be a fairly intense and rapid recovery.

Employed by Major Home Improvement retailer. Been informed that we are going to have way worse shortages than we already have or had anticipated.

The company is scrambling to conduct sweeping remodels of the "floor" to help offset the look of empty shelves and drop zones.

We received reporting that showed us our "get healthy" dates on stock that we ran out of and they came and went and we are still out of important items and material.

In fact over the next couple months you will be seeing major remodels in store. You'll know it when you see it. It's to maintain planogram integrity while keeping the stores "looking full" and investors happy.

This is only the beginning so it will most assuredly impact food and other essential items.

Get bulked out.
 Quoting: JimmyBones

No OP.

Your company has red balance inventory issues in relation to leasage and current consumer demand.

Your supply is responding to reduced demand, just like many sectors.

No big deal if you cause needless panic buying: there is atill room in line behind "preppin" hoarders seeking refunds on bulk items.
