I've got a diesel generator that runs just fine on a decanted mixture of stale old lawnmower gas and used motor oil. It will run the house and tools. The battery bank made from recycled hybrid car NiMH battery cells will keep the run time down. You can't deep cycle NiMH but 25 KWH of battery power means I dont need too.

The stale gas/waste oil mix and a burner is also good for forge, furnace and a maple sap evaporator. I haven't tried any casting yet though.

Here is a source for old time technology. Want to cast Iron? Aluminum?
Better hurry, they are thinking about closing.

Wow, I remember Lindsay Publications from decades ago. Used to read various publications from them way back then. A lot of that type of knowledge has been committed to memory and used often through out the year. Nevertheless, will have to take another look and see what gaps I need to fill. Thanks for the link!

You're welcome. Seriously they said that their sales had been down and were thinking of closing. What a loss that would be. If things go south, every home should have the complete set of Lindsay books.

There are many thousands and are free to download or purchase all on multiple blu-ray discs.

This 100% true. The HVAC market is decimated. American manufacturers don't have enough product to ship to distribution companies.
Many are out of product because of CIvic out breaks and because after the stimulus there was a rush to get work done and now they have more work than they can handle but can't get the necessary supplies to complete the work.
Not only does this have an issue with existing homeowners and buildings, but also new homes can't be completed without furnaces, as units, hot water tanks etc.
They expect supplies to pickup late 2020, early 2021.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77896934

yup

I heard you cannot get a carrier ac system at all, anywhere in the country.
 Quoting: ^TrInItY^

Nope, can't get Rheem, Amana, Trane, Lennox.
You can get mini-splits but that is about it.
Now here is the bigger issue, Winter.
Long range forecasters have said this Winter could be really cold and snowy.
People inevitably will have their furnaces break, but without inventory, they won't get fixed and thousands could die because they will not be able to survive the cold temperatures.
 Quoting: Buckeye Barney

IQ doesn't have a damn thing to do with an economic structure that for decades has been full of poverty and makes people not mind working for pennies a day.

That is certainly the long-term problem without a doubt.

Short term, however, the biggest factor is not enough cash and credit to have extra stock on the top shelves.

Most home improvement places are getting hammered on stock because of the quarantines for covid.

Almost everyone in my neighborhood is doing projects because work is slow.

I bought and reno'd a 1200 sq ft mobile, and on my other house built an outdoor sauna, bought a hot tub and built a wrap-around deck for it with red cedar, new 6' chainlink fence, leveled backyard, 4 dump truck loads of new sod, seeded new lawn, put a roof on my other deck, painted side deck and front deck, new security system to install next week.

Perfect year for home improvement.

Good year for cheap cash labor too.

Home reno has exploded this year. I know I'm not the only one.
Embrace the cognitive dissonance.

Reporting from the mountains of Arizona:

Went to Safeway Market, COMPLETELY STOCKED.

Went to Walmart, COMPLETELY STOCKED.

Went to Home Depot, all isles COMPLETELY STOCKED.

People were friendly and nice...like usual.

I restocked food and even have a rack full of just water.
It's looking fine I guess. And I hardly eat so thank God
this should last for quite a while.

You know, it constantly feels like we are isolated from
everything that is happening.

I guess the closer we get to the end of September, things

You've got to find the clerk (at walmart) over that area and find out when the order is coming in. And then BE THERE when it does. I gave up finding wide mouth jars and settled for some small mouth qt jars for pickles.

Did you know you can can whole fresh tomatos? (I'm not going to put an E on the end of tomato to make it plural) Lots of youtube videos on doing it.
 Quoting: Pilgrim001

Yeah that's what I do.

And thanks for the advice on the tomatoes. I've been doing that for years. Did 50 quarts yesterday. I don't buy vegetables from the grocery.
 Quoting: Dr. Acula

love canning and making homemade preserves .... whole tomatoes sounds awesome ... was just thinking about how to eat fresh tomatoes from the garden in winter .... never knew they could be canned whole!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75823884

Here is another trick...

Pick em green... wrap em in newspapers... store in a dry, cool, dark space.. u can have fresh tomatoes in December/January. No canning needed.
 Quoting: Dr. Acula

My son planted a bunch of tomatos, but as they were just getting ready to produce, the goats got into the garden and ate the tops out of all the plants. That pretty much ruined the tomato crop.
I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you.

I didn't think of this in ur thread the other day, Trin.

But finding home canning supplies such as metal lids and bands for jars is like finding gold. Even jars are getting hard to find.

Stores only get like a box at a time and they sell out super fast. If you are lucky enough to find them... you will pay a premium.

Home canning is essential to rural America. A lot of people myself included rely on preservation for survival.
 Quoting: Dr. Acula

Yep...agreed brother....we make hardly anything of our own any longer...
I feel ya! It’s gonna get even harder...for a little while.
However after a time we will make our own canning lids and and forks and spoons and refrigerators once again.
It will happen...for sure.!
