You're correct.

I hate to see this happen, but we need to get away from China. Things will be lean for a while, but looking at this positively, this is an amazing business opportunity.

Find those items that are needed most and start a company in the US.

The only trouble is that the SBA loans are almost frozen right now. That needs to change. Uncle Sam needs to start pumping money into the manufacturing sector immediately! It's not just loans - it truly is investing in the future of the United States and National Security.

President Trump is already bring back existing large businesses, but we must start new manufacturing here as well.

Employed by Major Home Improvement retailer. Been informed that we are going to have way worse shortages than we already have or had anticipated.

The company is scrambling to conduct sweeping remodels of the "floor" to help offset the look of empty shelves and drop zones.

We received reporting that showed us our "get healthy" dates on stock that we ran out of and they came and went and we are still out of important items and material.

In fact over the next couple months you will be seeing major remodels in store. You'll know it when you see it. It's to maintain planogram integrity while keeping the stores "looking full" and investors happy.

This is only the beginning so it will most assuredly impact food and other essential items.

Get bulked out.

The people to ask btw. are those that work in the ship yard. Ask them if the barges are still coming in or not from China

Clothing stores for example, are months behind cause they got stuck with spring and summer stock when the Corona hit and when they got to open up, they have a glut of old stock that has to be moved

Metal shortages too...

Something else is afoot here...

I'm already seeing this in grocery stores.

Use to have mid isle, end isle stock. Now its removed to fill the empty stock.

One guy I know is a big store manager. They're preparing for another huge shortage crisis and increased panic shopping when people realize.

Another guy I've meet is on a school board, high up there. Pennsylvania will not open schools and gov Wolf will announce this between Aug 13-17.

I agree with OP. Things are not getting better.

Yeah.

Talked to a vender in the Wal Mart aisle where foil and plastic ziplock bags are. He goes all over the east coast. One of those conversations where you both realize in a few minutes that the other is an aware doomer prepper.

Anyway, he waved his arm around the shelves and said that by later in the fall it is going to be hell and to get everything I can now. This was imperishable items, but it'll be the same for food, which almost always is in packaging.

Wish I had the cash for a boatload more of stuff, but glad for what we do have.

I’m having a hard time getting electrical material for my jobs.

So far it gets resolved by visiting numerous stores, then if that doesn’t work I put an order in and get parts a week later or so.

Kinda hard to be an efficient contractor working this way.

There ain’t no small business store gonna meet needs like this.

I recently took my teenager to get shoes at the closest largest mall. We went to Champs, Finish Line, etc. The entire mall looked pretty skimpy. Half of Macy's was bare too.

Anyway, the shoe stores appear to have a lot of shoes until you start asking about them. My teen points to a pair and says he wants his size to try on. The guy says, "well, uh... that's the only pair we have and it's a return." He repeats for other models. The same result... they have one pair and it's the display and whatever size it happens to be.

Basically the display pairs were most of their inventory.

So if sporting footwear/clothing stores are doing this. I can see what the OP is saying about "creating the illusion" of having inventory.

Interesting post...my local Wal-Mart is getting a remodel...new floors, etc as I speak...things are on clearance in nearly every area of the store...when I asked why, I was told there is more stuff coming ...we will see. Can you elaborate on what exactly is short in your store ?? What supplies in particular ? Examples ??

this is what happens in a situation where companies work on a just in time delivery profit model.

And then there is a pandemic. And buyers stop placing orders.
Then a president who uses China, the main supplier of... everything, as a floormat.

All of a sudden there is demand but everyone forgot to place orders on time. fearing tariffs, uncertainty.

Im telling you it destroys trade. When trade stops it destroys lives. And this is just the beginning.

If the USA does not start to re open asap and this trade war nonsense stops, then it is game over for the US economy.

People do not seem to realise just how bad things are right now. And how bad it will get if we do not end this insanity asap.

We already predicted this that stores would start closing and stop carrying when Amazon and online took over. I looked back on my purchases and half of them were online. If shortages spread online, then Id start to worry

With riots and looting going on, or looting just around the corner with talks to defund the police, why would physical stores want to be fully stocked?

I was told by someone that owns a large lumber retail outlet that they were told that New Years is the earliest that they can hope for to get treated lumber. Carter and major chain retailers have also confirmed this with contractors in my area that are now having trouble completing/starting new construction jobs. Hopefully this won't be the case but as of right now that's what has been said.
