Employed by Major Home Improvement retailer. Been informed that we are going to have way worse shortages than we already have or had anticipated.

The company is scrambling to conduct sweeping remodels of the "floor" to help offset the look of empty shelves and drop zones.

We received reporting that showed us our "get healthy" dates on stock that we ran out of and they came and went and we are still out of important items and material.

In fact over the next couple months you will be seeing major remodels in store. You'll know it when you see it. It's to maintain planogram integrity while keeping the stores "looking full" and investors happy.

This is only the beginning so it will most assuredly impact food and other essential items.

Get bulked out.

Sorry to here things are so bad stateside. My brother works in supply logistics for a major supermarket here in the UK and he says that we have more supplies and stockpiles than necessary and he isnt worried at all.

Just goes to show how each country is effected differently.

Praying for you USA.

Guess it's time for people to grow the fuck up and learn how to "make do".

I grew up on a little farm in the middle of no where. We were poor as fuck but never went hungry. If we needed something, we usually made it. Surprising what you can make with some hand tools, time and patience.

People are too fucking lazy and spoiled. "Whaa....I can't find what I want so I am going to whine like a little bitch!"

You great grandparents made it...probably without electricity and running water. You can make it too if you grow a spine and a set of nuts.

Buy hand tools...I mean the non electric kind and invest the time in learning how to use them correctly. I buy a lot of antique tools...nit to collect but to use. Try flea markets, antique stores and pawn shops.

Pro tip...before whining abiutnot being able to fund something...check your local pawnshops. Surprising what you can find sometimes

The best way to judge how the supply chain is doing without the info being spun for an agenda, is to look at the shipping container statistics for the Port of LA, the largest US port in terms of containers moved through it, and the port of entry for most of our imports from China.

[link to www.portoflosangeles.org (secure)]

Overall, incoming shipping containers are down 17.11% in 2020 compared to 2019. A noticeable drop in my opinion, but not a "everybody run to the stores and buy what you can because it is all about to disappear" number.

I think we are in the "need to be smart and careful" stage, not the "worry or panic" stage.

Re: Supply chain issues from an insider.
The Covid lockdown resulted in many supply chain disasters.

#1, Grocers... Most urban dwellers eat one or more meals "out" on daily basis. Brown bagging it isn't very popular, so most workers got their lunch, and many got their dinner or breakfast prepared somewhere other than home. Those meal supplying channels were mostly shutdown. Figure the grocers had a large number of new shoppers buying much more food.

Just In Time Inventory methods and the same optimized warehousing of distributors could not meet the unforecast 40% or greater surge in demand. Restaurant supply houses saw their demand drop through the floor. Abundant food in America, but the distribution of that food could not be reconfigured quickly.

As the food supplies began to catch grocers up on supply, the vast increase in demand consumed what was available.

Great amount of packaging, cans, boxes, labels and preservatives etc had been sourced from China for years. Those resources are still not back online, nor is there an expectation for their resumption.

Most "in-demand" foods packed for some degree of long shelf life are sold-out. Lesser quality brands have taken their place; for now. Lots of lost food due to handling problems and processing delays.

The official advisors recommending citizens build a pantry resource for their food needs are further stressing the distribution networks. Of course, having longterm food storage at home is a great idea! Yet when food storage for 330 million Americans becomes the goal, and fewer than half of those people were relying on grocers for even half their meals, it means there isn't capacity to enable its happening.

Understand that you have to get what you can find at the grocers when you find it. Supplies are unlikely to improve significantly anytime soon... Wholesalers and distributors aren't going to build new warehousing or go into debt to fund capacity for what is likely viewed as a short-term problem.

#2 Building materials. In lockdown, America's tradesmen and DIYers had time and tools on hand, so they did projects they'd put off... Again, more unanticipated demand for capacity limited by the expected JIT inventory seasonal demands.

About the only lumber imports, other than specialty woods like mahogany, come from Canada. Yet, most hardware, tools, and other plumbing and electric supplies were produced in China.

All work done in America since Covid's outbreak has been reduced by distancing and other restrictions. Thus: shortages.

Chinese sourced gear & supplies are backlogged with no resumption in sight.

For the want of a nail... Just might come to be a reality.

These are just 2 of the challenges facing our "consumer society". Virtually everything we buy has some component sourced from China or other foreign nation. Most of the foreign nations sourced their processed materials, chemicals, and components from China.

What we are faced with is "What you see on the shelves is probably all you're going to be able to get"! Buying online? Don't hesitate. Might not remain in stock very long...

Even if/when China resumes production and then shipments to customers, it will take months maybe years to build up inventories a restock retailer customers. Then, there's also the Trump/Xi tradewar and political blustering.

What all this really points to is Your Need To Become As Self-Sufficient As Possible.

Resale shops are already seeing big reductions in donations as people decide they'd best hold onto clothes and gear which they would have donated last year without any concern.

There's only so much of what's available. Once it's gone, it's gone.

You can depend on the fact that Essentials will inflate in price very strongly and non-Essentials will face close-out price reductions or sit on the retailers shelves forever.
 Quoting: Lester 13234408

You can be as "self sufficient" as you want, but there's just some items most people cannot make for themselves.

Lumber, such as 2x4's, unless you own a forest. Electrical supplies/lines, recepticles, etc.

At some point, our U.S. manufacturers have to get back to making those types of items in country. Everyone can have all the farms they want, but some things aren't in everyone's wheelhouse to make or create.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79174252

part owner of a tree farm, my part will never be cut for lumber, it is to remain as is for the animals and planet.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75823884

Where is this located?? I would like to come take your lumber and animals when the SHTF....

Auto parts are scarce. No lumber. No bleach wipes since March. Flour and yeast goes fast off shelves. Expiration dates are all Aug on eggs. The Bounty paper towels are Winter season ones.

I pray you all have shelf stable food for winter. It looks like it's going to get really rough. I hate to say it, but we're going down.

Was just in our local walmart and they got a shipment of ammo in yesterday. 3 Box limit. But they had some of everything. And I noticed they had more shotguns and rifles in the display case than last weekend.

Also involved in the supply chain (shipping / rec) and there are also lots of things that we have a big surplus of due to over-compensating at the start of the shutdown. Yes, there are a few shortages, but it's no big deal. I know that's not what the glp doom merchants want to hear, but whatever.

Here you go. I'm sure you can figure out that add it to cart and submit order thing.

[link to www.homedepot.com (secure)]

This is a "just in time" inventory system failure. It's been going on for several years and just exacerbated by scums who deliberately initiated unnecessary buying frenzies.

You can find articles going back 4 or 5 years of people complaining of empty shelves because of this new system.

You'd have to be mentally retarded not to see that this propaganda event would weigh heavily on an already flimsy inventory system.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 36998324

It's because our morons in the US don't understand what "Just in time" is. In Japan it works, throughout Europe it works. Meanwhile in the US, it's a god damn disaster that's going to bring huge empty shelves, despite product actually existing with no way to deliver or properly order because of various stupid reasons.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77390678

just in time delivery is foolish. i work in a factory and see it all the time, watching the business scramble to re-tool, shuttle things around and waste tons of setup time to manufacture a quick run of components or assemblies for some customer who had their equipment fail at peak season in a different country half way around the world because keeping inventory and building a few extras while you have jigs set up, material on hand, and cutting/forming/machining/welding machinery in position and set up for that job is seen as wasteful and foolish - until that call comes in and you have those parts on hand to ship out immediately.

they can't see that inventory costs are GREATLY offset by wasted re-tooling time, and a variety of other costs. if you are building a run of parts, build a few extra while you're there and throw them on a shelf.

somehow inventory became a boogeyman to be avoided at all costs. totally ridiculous. almost seems to be part of the worlds new ideology of buy and throw away disposable culture - repair nothing. if anything even remotely fails just throw it away and buy new. totally moronic

I hate to see this happen, but we need to get away from China. Things will be lean for a while, but looking at this positively, this is an amazing business opportunity.

Find those items that are needed most and start a company in the US.

The only trouble is that the SBA loans are almost frozen right now. That needs to change. Uncle Sam needs to start pumping money into the manufacturing sector immediately! It's not just loans - it truly is investing in the future of the United States and National Security.

President Trump is already bring back existing large businesses, but we must start new manufacturing here as well.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77288913

THIS I agree completely
 Quoting: page8844 72511948

I hate to tell you it is not up to you alone.
Trump may selectively decide what they want to block from China but China can do the same. And their decisions will then impact the USA very very very hard. Critical components, equipment or goods for entire industries.

You may have the dream of building everything in the USA but if you do it while pissing on China and expecting them to take it up the butt then you are in for a rude awakening.

China can cripple the USA before any of your made in USA production dreams materialize.
China can outcompete you on every level on the global markets. You may sell your 50$ hammer in the USA to fools while the rest of the world pays 1$.

There is just no winning strategy in this made in the USA ideology. World markets will move, and the USA will just fall back further and further. not smart.

But this is not the issue at hand here. It is fear, uncertainty that screws up your supplychains. Mostly because of Trump making the fatal mistake of mizing trade with politics and using trade extortion to force a political outcome.

Believe me, people all over the world are watching. The USA is NOT a reliable partner anymore. Unpredictable, deceiving and manipulating. Not a winning combination.

Exactly. Covid brought the global supply chain to a screeching halt. It shouldn't be shocking that we're now dealing a lack of goods that were largely supplied by China.

Many didn't realize just how much of what we depend on for food, entertainment, technology, industry and medicine is supplied by China.

This is what happens when you base nearly your entire supply chain in another country and then have a worldwide disaster. As bad as it's been, we're honestly lucky that the crisis we have to deal with is a pandemic and not an all-out war.

And then there is a pandemic. And buyers stop placing orders.
