the part this chris palmer is missing is that it set off a nitrogen tank nearby.

if it had been an lpg tank, that blastwave you could see in the air would have been a fireball and everyone for miles would have been dead.

The other part he's missing is that if it would have been an atomic detonation (no matter the yield) the EMP shockwave alone would have fried all of those devices that were recording the event and there would have been much greater devastation in the immediate area.

Do these people have any fucking idea how fucking big the explosions is from a small nuke, 10kt on rikers island for example would basically destroy everything on rikers and the heat and shockwave would cause extreme damage over the water at the end of hunts point, port morris, steinway and college point and most of laguardia airport would be in ruins.

Most of whats central in that image would be gone, and all the waterside areas of those major built up areas would be in ruins and the tall buildings miles away would be on fire, that would be a tiny nuke too. 10kt.

dont know much about nitrate based chemicals but sodium is a pretty dangerous metal and nitrate based fertilizers can cause some serious explosions, so im guessing a few thousand lbs of sodium nitrtae trigged by a gas explosion or something could do some pretty comparable to a few large yeild conventional laser guided bombs of a few thousand lbs.

I'm well aware of the codename davy crocket nuke, there was a design for a shoulder fired/tripod fired mobile nuclear missle, the problem was even the smallest turned down yeilds they prototyped were so damned fucking powerfull the guy with the launcher would still have to be 4 or 5km away fromt the target and take cover behind something like a concrete embankment.

As for 0.01kt nukes, nah, was theoretical, i think the smallest tested were huge orders of magnitude more powerful.

My nuclear physics is a bit lacking these days, but i think the EMP is a result of neutron, electron and gamma discharge in the atmosphere, a theoretical small kt yeild nuke might not actually cause significant emp if it isnt airburst.

Theoretically it might work at high altitude with a detonation profile designed to generate large amounts of electrical dischange as an emp strike against a high altitude target that wasnt emp hardened.

I dont think it could be used underwater though as water will act as a neutron deflector i think, so emp against subs and ships wouldnt be viable unless somebody knows of a theoretical other way, microwave/gamma burst maybe
