I think it is pretty clear that AstraZeneca isn't very effective against the variant strains. What still remains to be seen is how the other vaccines do against them. The mRNA seems to be more effective, based on the info we're getting so far.... but that may or may not be meaningful.

CA is removing most restrictions, including mask mandates, in just over a month. I'm utterly terrified of this happening, and I suspect it is inviting disaster. However, I am trying to get the things done that I need to do (smog check, one more junk haul away, etc.) before that happens. This may be my window of opportunity to get it done before the surge I'm expecting.

My building feels less and less safe. Our upstairs neighbors are moving, which means new people in the building ... and we are losing a housemate (and can't afford to leave that space empty.) I suspect I'm going to take the plunge and get vaxxed after grades are in... I just can't manage to avoid people entirely, and the few things I do in public (mainly, going to the pharmacy) are going to be increasingly dangerous.

do i think the vaccines as they are will work for ALL new variants ? no. do i thiink ppl with health issues should take the vaccine? no.


odds are the vaccines do not work well on the changing variants. it was made to deal with the original strain that the US had last year.same way the flu vaccine is each year.


we'll know more in 2 yrs or so. i'm in a wait and see mode. but with good PPE and less traveling. duck and cover.

As I review these increasing cases in Central America, and I am not sure, but I would think it is the P-1 or P-2 variant from South America, I think of an ocean tide. It is slowly moving up to North America and will go through Mexico and then our open borders down South.

I’m concerned about the effects after the next few days of Eid celebrations. Large Asian communities around this part of the UK will undoubtedly be mixing households in large groups this weekend. Potentially this could turn into a big problem very fast.

Wouldn’t this cause even more selection pressure for the virus? The infection rate numbers are growing exponentially. Don’t think they will be able keep up.

That would be all options except locking down again I'd imagine!

No idea if this is true or not, but I've known this guy Leonardi on twitter for a while so I will defer to this his expertise since he has been a student and/or worked at John Hopkins University. He believes the Indian variant swallows T cells.
