“We found that face masks strongly increase the humidity in inhaled air and propose that the resulting hydration of the respiratory tract could be responsible for the documented finding that links lower COVID-19 disease severity to wearing a mask,” said the study’s lead author, Adriaan Bax, Ph.D., NIH Distinguished Investigator. “High levels of humidity have been shown to mitigate severity of the flu, and it may be applicable to severity of COVID-19 through a similar mechanism.”

Wonderful thread OP. How you kept this to 'just the facts' for 40 pages is incredible.

This is a chance for Australians to contribute to the international scientific fight against COVID-19

If you have tested positive for COVID-19, you can help unravel the mystery of why people respond so differently to the virus.

This research looks at both genetic factors and antibodies that remain in the blood of recovered COVID patients.

The findings could lead to new treatments and future vaccine developments for COVID.

Researchers propose that humidity from masks may lessen severity of COVID-19

NIH study compares how different face masks affect humidity inside the mask.

Different medicines may be tested during the study at the same time.

The ACTIV-2 Study is testing different investigational medicines to see if they are safe and can help adults with COVID-19 get better.

The investigational medicines that researchers believe are most likely to help people with COVID-19 will be tested in this study.

One type of investigational medicine you might receive in the study is a monoclonal antibody. Antibodies are naturally made by your body to help fight disease. Monoclonal antibodies are made in the laboratory and help your body attack invaders, such as viruses, to keep them from entering your cells.

Any form of dehydration will cause pneumonia to explode.

Makes sense, due to respiratory system requires naturally moisturized environment.

'Angry' cells
Scientists looked at the DNA of patients in more than 200 intensive care units in UK hospitals.
They scanned each person’s genes, which contain the instructions for every biological process - including how to fight a virus.
Their genomes were then compared with the DNA of healthy people to pinpoint any genetic differences, and a number were found - the first in a gene called TYK2.
“It is part of the system that makes your immune cells more angry, and more inflammatory,” explained Dr Baillie.
But if the gene is faulty, this immune response can go into overdrive, putting patients at risk of damaging lung inflammation.
A class of anti-inflammatory drugs already used for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis targets this biological mechanism, including a drug called Baricitinib.

Variant Watch USA

b117 (UK variant) cases increased a fair bit since last update

very little change in the p1 (Brazil) and b1351 (South Africa) variants

these numbers are not an accurate representation of true case numbers due to insufficient genomic surveillance in the USA

Well I guess every lab has free access to every test and everyone’s DNA

When COVID-19 started taking hold in the United States, scientists at the institute, affiliated with Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, realized its genome-reading machines could be repurposed to test patient samples for the coronavirus that causes the disease.

Over the course of two weeks in March, the lab retooled. At a time when testing for the virus has been a critical failing in the U.S. response to the pandemic, Broad says it now has the capacity to run 35,000 tests per day.

Broad is one of several genomics labs across the country that have reinvented themselves as COVID-19 testing centers. Machines that routinely decoded the 3 billion letters that make up a person's genetic blueprint have been quickly brought to bear on the coronavirus' 30,000-letter genome.

From the paper....

suggesting that a relatively small number of mutations can mediate potent escape from vaccine responses.

Not just the U.S., but others too are giving.

The world is potentially one bad mutation or mutations away from the virus permanently escaping any vaccine. Doesn't matter the country where it happens, once it happens much of the world will probably be fucked. So that's why countries are keen to give to the fund, to put it bluntly.

Awful

Now we know why authorities are more alarmed by the SA variant than others

The SA variant and other variants (such as the Brazil one) have the same escape mutation... but strange that for some reason the mutation seems to be way more effective in the SA variant

hmm

SA variant cluster in France. Average age of the ICU patients there is younger than typically seen in patients infected from older variants. (This is a similar to the anecdotal reporting in South Africa weeks ago when they had their surge).

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is scrambling to expand DNA mapping of coronavirus samples taken from patients to identify potentially deadlier mutations that are starting to spread around the country.
On Wednesday, the White House announced a scaled up push by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and by a U.S. Army biodefense institute. But the more significant action is on Capitol Hill, where a House bill headed for floor debate would provide $1.75 billion for genomic sequencing.
