So lambda hasn’t taken over from delta in South America ?
 Quoting: ParamedicUK

I don't think delta has taken off there yet, but we don't really have good data I'll have to dig around more.

But I'm pretty sure Lambda was running amok down there while Delta was still getting it's boots on in India.

More from the “no shit, who could have possibly seen this coming” corner.... followed by let’s give them a shot too. SMH

Child cases of COVID-19 rising with school year around the corner

Less than 50%

No COVID-19 vaccine has yet been given the green light for Americans younger than 12. And while pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Moderna are conducting clinical trials, it will likely be months until younger children are able to get a shot.

Just starting in Brazil. Here comes another Brazilian issue.

Brazil, one of the countries hardest hit by the covid pandemic in the world, has so far identified 110 cases of contagion with the delta variant of the coronavirus, which is more transmissible and constitutes a threat to this nation, official sources reported Monday.

Just so happens to be where I'm staying tonight.

Cases are up a bit, but still low. Hospitalizations pretty much flat.

Mask usage and social distancing is at 0%, shit's back to normal here.

As a matter of fact it's back to normal everywhere from Connecticut and north.

Spent the first half of the week working in upstate New York, I'd say mask usage and overall COVID precautions there were at 25% of what they were 6 months ago.

Why the fuck don't they just push the Olympics so it's back on a 4 year schedule for summer/winter?

That shit ruined the games separating them out, it wasn't a special event anymore.

So another fun fact about Lambda... it was first detected in Peru in December 2020, and it hit 80% of cases in April.

Oddly, new cases in Peru peaked April 10th and have been declining ever since.

And Peru is in the Southern Hemisphere entirely... they were entering fall in April.

The 7 day average of deaths there is at the lowest point since April 2020, and new cases will hit that point at the current trajectory in another week or two.

hmm

There's no bones about it, Delta is a nasty bug... but I think Lambda is a nothingburger.
 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

What is it you're saying, variants mean every wave should go on for eternity, and if they don't they're a nothingburger? doh

I remember you said something similar for South Africa that they were doing ok after their second wave, which was an utter shitshow, just because that didn't last forever. A few months later and their third wave has turned out to be similarly hellish.

What should worry people when it comes to Lambda is Peru had a really high amount of total infections before Lambda arrived. Possibly the highest per capita of anywhere in the world. Despite that it didn't prevent Lambda from causing problems.

I don't know if the numbers quite back up your claim that Peru was that high in cases per capita, they peaked at 9,400 per day in a nation of 33 million.

Texas has a similar population and peaked at 24,000 per day... given they tested 2.5 times more I'd say it was a very similar outbreak.

What I'm saying is that Lambda in Peru was similar to Alpha in the US, one it took over cases started to drop (until Delta).

And I can't stress enough... it's winter now in Peru and cases are still low. As a matter of fact, they're just about the lowest they've ever been.

Peru doesn't have a winter :) They have the wet season and dry season due to their proximity to the equator.

Dutchy.... here have a data hunt....

 Quoting: CleverCreator

The reporting is wrong as always, the number is to low. Given 5m people, a life expectancy of ~80 and a progressive increase to now about 60% vaccinated I would have expected the number to be around 7-10k.

The key thing to note is these are people whom died within 28 days after being vaccinated, there is no attribution to the vaccination as cause of death. The reporting simply mimics that of covid cases which is a good thing.
