Article on the horror of long covid sad

“A doctor leading a study into “long Covid” told The Times that virtually all her patients aged between 18 and 40 had neurological problems, ranging from impaired balance and motor control to physical numbness and difficulty with language.”

Health experts and lawmakers have warned Brazil is steaming into the darkest days of its coronavirus catastrophe, as fatalities soared to new heights and one prominent politician compared the crisis to an atomic bomb.

Politicians from across the spectrum voiced anger and exasperation at the deteriorating situation on Monday, after Brazil’s weekly average of Covid deaths hit its highest level since the epidemic began last February and hospitals around the country reported being swamped.

So... Brazil is getting ravaged from the p1/p2 variants. The general feeling in the past few weeks had been the South Africa b1351 variant was the more dangerous one(in terms of escape mutation), but I don't even think South Africa got hit as badly(relatively) as Brazil is right now.

The anti-inflammatory drug hydroxychloroquine should not be used to prevent COVID-19, according to a new recommendation from the World Health Organization.

Multiple clinical trials of more than 6,000 people showed the drug had no meaningful effect on death or admissions to the hospital in people who had no prior exposure to COVID-19.

I was under the false impression that the Covid19 virus had not been isolated. According to the CDC it was, from the first case up in Washington State last years.

[link to www.cdc.gov (secure)]

... Timeline:

On January 20, 2020, CDC received a clinical specimen collected from the first reported U.S. patient infected with SARS-CoV-2. CDC immediately placed the specimen into cell culture to grow a sufficient amount of virus for study.

On February 2, 2020, CDC generated enough SARS-CoV-2 grown in cell culture to distribute to medical and scientific researchers.

On February 4, 2020, CDC shipped SARS-CoV-2 to the BEI Resources Repository.

An article discussing the isolation and characterization of this virus specimen is available in Emerging Infectious Diseases.

This just appeared on the BBC.

Drip drip drip....

P1 variant - 25-60% of people could get reinfected twice as fast!

OMG!

The Brazil variant now found in the UK appears to be more contagious and able to evade immunity provided by past infection with coronavirus, say scientists who have done the first detailed study.

Experiences from Manaus - the Amazonian city hit hard by the P1 variant - suggest it may be up to twice as transmissible as earlier Covid, they say.

The preliminary work, which hasn’t been peer-reviewed yet, puts the chances of a person getting reinfection at between 25% and 60%.

Ok but for now i feel there are problems abroad where the focus is.

'Serbian health experts have called for government to introduce a state of emergency and a strict lockdown to halt a surge in coronavirus infections in the Balkan country.

The numbers of daily new infections have been rising sharply in the nation of 7 million despite a mass inoculation campaign that so far has seen nearly 1 million people receive a first vaccine shot. That rate of vaccinations has made Serbia, a non-European Union nation, one of the best in Europe when it comes to delivering vaccines to its citizens.

Still, the demand for a state of emergency is unlikely to win support from the conservative government, which is hoping that its program of trying to get vaccines from the West, China and Russia will pull Serbia out of the pandemic's devastating economic and social undertow.'

I feel the main forum for the virus is shifting to continental Europe where the jabs are behind the UK.

I think the UK's worst days are behind us, for now at least. What happens in 3,6,12 months.. anyone's guess!

Moderna vaccine slows the spread

For me, it's clear the vaccines are inhibiting spread. My fear is that this forces the virus to mutate (simply), and finds away to infect faster.

We really are just in one giant experiment.

 Quoting: ParamedicUK

I get that the risk of death or severe acute infection is substantially lower in kids, but surely by wearing the masks it's more likely to stop kids from getting infected and importantly stop them passing it onto their families and wider community?

In a few months time we could easily find the vac doesn't get the transmission rate down below 1 so it might be we need to rely on masks to avoid a risk of further dodgy mutations.

Wow. That high chance of reinfection is bad enough but the transmission increase is ugly too. I don't even think they found b117 to be as transmissible as P1 is.

Summertime seemed to do the trick in keeping the infections low in UK last year. Although this time need to be wary this time because of the mutant variants. But yeah, probably it will take until Autumn if cases go up significantly again in UK, when the real test will arrive.

Anyone else find it odd why all these UK prisons keep having outbreaks lately? I would have thought with the b117 variant being so dominant in the UK the prisons (which are ideal for superspreader events) would have had their outbreaks in December/January not February/March.
