Wait, so many billions have already been spent on the pandemic in the UK, many of it misused sending unfathomable sums of money to cronies of government to pay for inadequate covid services. But now all of a sudden some extra millions can't be found for the people who deserve it the most?


The government is coming under further pressure to reconsider its planned 1% pay rise for NHS staff, with more unions joining the backlash.

The British Medical Association and other unions said their staff "have literally kept the country alive for the past year".

In an open letter to the chancellor they called for a "fair pay deal".

Health Secretary Matt Hancock earlier defended the pay increase, saying it was "what we think is affordable".

But healthcare staff reacted with anger at the plan. The Royal College of Nursing called the rise "pitiful" and started preparing for strike action, saying that its members should get 12.5% instead.

And Unite - the third largest union in the NHS - said it is considering a strike ballot.

Now more unions have joined their calls. The BMA, the Royal College of Nursing, the Royal College of Midwives and Unison have written a joint letter to Chancellor Rishi Sunak to express their dismay

The proposal of a 1% pay offer, not announced from the despatch box but smuggled out quietly in the days afterwards, fails the test of both honesty and fails to provide staff who have been on the very frontline of the pandemic the fair pay deal they need," the letter said.

Our members are the doctors, nurses, midwives, porters, healthcare assistants and more, already exhausted and distressed, who are also expected to go on caring for the millions of patients on waiting lists, coping with a huge backlog of treatment as well as caring for those with Covid-19.

There is no obvious lag between deaths and cases. And as the medical system collapses the death rate storms up quicker than cases.

These strange covid times are a real eye-opener for sure.

Could be they're running low on testing capacity or people in some areas don't have to means available to them to find a place to go get tested... unless they get hospitalized and/or die.

Brazil is at like 60k cases average at the moment? Yeah for the number of deaths they're having that seems to me very much on the low side. In my opinion many cases aren't being registered.

I suppose you get to the point that cases mean even less than they did and at the end of the day the only true graph to measure the impact is deaths.

P1 could also be a lot more deadly ?!

Yeah and on top of that there's the excess deaths numbers which are seen as a more reliable indicator of actual covid deaths in some countries because there are those who die due to the covid but for one reason or another their death certificate doesn't mention covid. I remember this happened a lot in Mexico last year where people were suspected to be dying from covid in large numbers but they were afraid to go to hospital or hospitals were full etc. That resulted in a big discrepancy between official covid deaths and the excess death toll.

Well the same thing is probably happening in Brazil right now. Many hospitals are full, people can't get there so a great many are probably dying in their own homes and aren't having their deaths diagnosed as a covid death. So if they're recording 1,800 covid deaths per day now then maybe it's more like 3,000 in reality.
