Remember all the buzz a month ago about the new mutation of #SARSCoV2 (D->G) in the spike protein (that is now the dominant form) that was thought to increase transmission?
Well, that has not been borne out [ link to twitter.com (secure)] Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78260614 The study from above: Evaluating the effects of SARS-CoV-2 Spike mutation D614G on transmissibility and pathogenicity [ link to www.medrxiv.org (secure)] Article is pre-print and not peer-reviewed"Phylodynamic analysis does not show a significant increase in growth rates for clusters with the 614G variant, but population genetic modelling indicates that 614G increases in frequency relative to 614D in a manner consistent with a selective advantage. We also investigate the potential influence of Spike 614D versus G on virulence by matching a subset of records to clinical data on patient outcomes. We do not find any indication that patients infected with the Spike 614G variant have higher COVID-19 mortality, but younger patients have slightly increased odds of 614G carriage. Despite the availability of a very large data set, well represented by both Spike 614 variants, not all approaches showed a conclusive signal of higher transmission rate for 614G, but significant differences in growth, size, and composition of these lineages indicate a need for continued study."The authors note that even though they do not question the increased ability of the 614G to more easily bind to the ACE2 receptor as in-vitro studies suggest and that said effect is present in-vivo, "differences in cell infectivity will not necessarily be associated with greater within-host infectivity let alone transmissibility between hosts. The spread of a mutation in a population will be governed by epidemiological dynamics, patterns of global dispersion (founder effects), genetic drift/chance, as well as any potential fitness effects it confers if it enhances transmissibility."-Opinion- In essence it's pretty simply saying that yes the virus has changed a bit but that changes nothing in the bigger picture of the pandemic.
