It is so nice to be here and not have to listen to George claim otherwise when the numbers don't lie...but debating him was akin to banging your head on a brick wall...
 Quoting: P-E Georgia Geoprepper

I have to be honest and say that he helped me yesterday. I am repeating the story here in case anyone missed it or the information on the other thread.

My husband is a naval officer stationed in Italy, and he will have to have a vaccine for an upcoming mission in May. It is not the US government or the Italian government requiring it, by the way. I want to make that clear. Another country's ship is involved, so it's their mandate.

In George's many posts yesterday, he mentioned that if you don't want to take the mRNA vaccine, then wait for the Johnson & Johnson one, which apparently is not mRNA and is also one dose. He said it would be emergency approved this week.

I didn't know the J&J vaccine was not mRNA. I asked George a couple of questions, and he was nice to me and provided some answers.

Today the news indicates that the J&J vaccine will be emergency approved by the end of the week.

We were able to make some phone calls to the hospital on base today to ask them if they are going to get the J&J vaccine. They don't know, but I'm hopeful they will get it. If my husband has to get a vaccine, I want it to be the J&J (non-mRNA) one.

Sorry for the wall of text. I hope this may help someone else who might not be on the other thread. :)

Is it better / hmmm DNA based / think not:

[link to www.nytimes.com (secure)]

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is based on the virus’s genetic instructions for building the spike protein. But unlike the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, which store the instructions in single-stranded RNA, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses double-stranded DNA.

DNA Inside an Adenovirus

The researchers added the gene for the coronavirus spike protein to another virus called Adenovirus 26. Adenoviruses are common viruses that typically cause colds or flu-like symptoms. The Johnson & Johnson team used a modified adenovirus that can enter cells but can’t replicate inside them or cause illness.

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine comes out of decades of research on adenovirus-based vaccines. In July, the first one was approved for general use — a vaccine for Ebola, also made by Johnson & Johnson. The company is also running trials on adenovirus-based vaccines for other diseases, including H.I.V. and Zika. Some other coronavirus vaccines are also based on adenoviruses, such as the one developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca using a chimpanzee adenovirus.

Adenovirus-based vaccines for Covid-19 are more rugged than mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. DNA is not as fragile as RNA, and the adenovirus’s tough protein coat helps protect the genetic material inside. As a result, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can be refrigerated for up to three months at 36–46°F (2–8°C).

Bugger that!!!! The thought of DNA concerns me?

Remember in about September, the ridiculous drive to get everyone vaccinated against flu??

I was saying to my family, and probably also on this thread, that I didn't believe there would BE a flu season this winter.
I was right.

Important because there are several papers showing that those vaccinated against flu have a higher propensity for Coronavirus infection than those who are unvaccinated. Odd that it works out like that, but that's the science.
(skeptics, please look back in this thread to around 23-30 Sept 2020 for the papers..)

Vaccine developers will not have to conduct lengthy clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of shots tailored to fight new coronavirus variants, according to new guidance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the guidance released Monday, developers will not need large randomized control trials comparing it to a placebo.

Instead, the FDA said it recommended companies submit data from small trials comparing a person's immune response to a vaccine that has already been authorized.

BUT FOR IVERMECTIN...
we can't possibly use it because there aren't enough double-blind randomised control trials... despite it being used for 40 yrs in the wild already... and having basically zero adverse effects compared to vaccines....

Large outbreak at Strangeways Prison.

Schools back in a week and a half. Almost a completely unvaccinated cohort. Roughly 3,000,000 children and 700,000 staff. What could go wrong.

The levels of virus are surely still far too high.

The Adenovirus vector can be an issue - because the body recognises it after it has seen it before.. so it will be unclear whether someone who had the AstraZeneca vaccine will be able to take the J&J vaccine...because their immune system will destroy the J&J adenovirus before it can work.

In addition sub-Saharan Africa will have a problem:

Quoting Professor Clancy:
The adenovirus vector cannot be relied on for second immunisations (as antibody to the simian virus carrier limits response). For the same reason, the vector vaccine has limited value in Sub Saharan Africa, where exposure to simian viruses is common.

A friend forwarded this to me yesterday, from Yahoo News (oxymoron for sure) cool2

[link to news.yahoo.com (secure)]

My gist from the article:

This mutation emerged in May, so been here awhile, has become dominant strain in CA. Easier spreading, more evasive to antibodies from prior infection or vaccine.

Some of the article:

B.1.427/B.1.429's genome includes three mutations that affect the crucial spike protein, which the virus uses to sneak into human cells and convert them into factories for its own production. One of those three mutations, dubbed L452R, affects the so-called receptor binding domain, helping the virus attach more firmly to target cells.

That adaptation has not been seen in coronavirus variants that have caused worry elsewhere.

In a UCSF lab, scientists found that the L452R mutation alone made the California strain more damaging as well. A coronavirus engineered to have only that mutation was able to infect human lung tissue at least 40% more readily than were circulating variants that lacked the mutation. Compared with those so-called wild-type strains, the engineered virus was more than three times more infectious. ...
 Quoting: Dosha

Took them quite a while to get a better idea about that California variant.

We could be in the early stages of a whole new problematic variant spreading right now and we might not know the details about its mutation until summer.

I have a strange feeling that the UK is sleep walking into a potential summer of chaos. The media outlets are all focusing on the feel good headlines of a Mask free summer and music festivals. Once this seeps into the psyche of the general public people’s guards are going to start dropping.

I hope I’m being overly cautious but it feels very premature to celebrate right now. Until schools reopen we won’t know for sure what the situation is.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78062583

One of the suggestions given by Dr. Paul Cottrell (one of his videos was posted here recently) was sars-cov2 is a stronger virus than the flu, and as a result after you've been infected with sars-cov2 in the short-term you are less susceptible to infection from the flu. He managed to explain it more eloquently than I can, but that was the gist of what he said.

Aside from that, the one thing to keep in mind is the R rate of flu in normal times is about 1.4. Therefore all these covid restrictions and mitigations would have likely knocked the R rate way below zero and made it very hard for flu to spread.

Going to be a shitshow IMO. Even if the vaccine is effective, the rollout will still take a while longer and the plan to lift the Covid restrictions is too fast.

They thought wishful thinking was going to work last year and it didn't. Nothing has been learned as they are pushing the wishful thinking again.
