Not seen much of this recently with the infection rates being so low.

Weird - so it all goes away after the week end ?

Probably just to do a deep clean I'd imagine.

Dutchy-- It was Worldometer. Shows 542 (I misremembered the exact number when I posted) new cases, under the Alameda County number for yesterday. I have no idea if those are real cases, or just delayed reporting, or what ....
 Quoting: Doommonkey

Not seeing any such spike in the Alameda County dashboard - [link to covid-19.acgov.org (secure)] though the past few days had been below average, which may indicate there were problems with the reporting. Slide three on their dashboard is probably the most important, 14-day avarage, but that is still backdated to the 2nd. We should be seeing the week highs the next three days (thu/fri/sat) so keep a eye out, if things don't recede back to 100-150 it might be something to worry about.
 Quoting: Dutchy20

....if it was a data dump....

They go back and add it to the correct day testing was done. So it won’t lookout of place.

It is why I keep track of Iowa’s total from day to day. That total has zero to do with actual that day.... but it does show how bad they are at adding cases .... three times (minimum) over an extra 30k appeared.

Just one small data point, but I wanted to report it. The middle school on our base was closed yesterday due to a case of Covid. I'm not sure if it was a child or adult, but there it is. Less than one week after our region went from orange to yellow.

We basically live on a campus....apartment housing, one school, one grocery store, one hospital, etc. They are contact tracing which will hopefully avoid an outbreak.

Edit to add: Naples, Italy

CC... the fertility thing is in the spotlight again. U.S. Birth rate fell 1% in 2019. But in 2020 the fall accelerated to 4%. To have a fall doesn't seem unusual because it follows a trend of six years, but the rate of decline during 2020 does seem rather high to be dismissed as just the trend.

Yesterday South Africa recorded their highest case load in two and a half months. Seems like the new wave is starting. I did warn to look out for a new wave in South Africa during May/June due to seasonality theory.

The Indian PM's political party lost an important election that they expected to win. Seems this is one way for Indians to express their displeasure with the handling of the covid crisis. Either that or a big chunk of the Indian electorate that was going to vote for Modi's party died from covid(due to the increased likelihood of them being hoaxers and not taking the virus seriously) and therefore weren't able to vote for him.

A surprise defeat in one of India’s biggest states shows that Modi is not invincible

It's birthdate though. For it to count in the 2020 number conception would have to have been before the end of march 2020. Would seem a bit early to attribute to covid already.

Bees in the Netherlands trained to detect COVID-19 infections

Dutch researchers have trained bees, which have an unusually keen sense of smell, to identify samples infected with COVID-19, a finding they said could cut waiting times for test results to just seconds.

To train the bees, scientists in the bio-veterinary research laboratory at Wageningen University gave them sugary water as a reward after showing them samples infected with COVID-19. They would get no reward after being shown a non-infected sample.

Just don't let the bees escape the lab because they're going to be flying up the noses of infecteds!

But late March was near to the first peak of infections.

To get a clearer picture it might be better to have a look at births in December compared to December in the year before that. I'm not sure if data from individual months has been published though.

But care homes were much better protected during the second wave, so I'm not sure how useful this study is.

I remember an earlier study from Denmark where the re-infection possibility for the over 65s was put at 50%.

In past weeks the per capita cases have fallen a fair bit in 10 most vaccinated states. However, the per capita cases in the 10 least vaccinated states is still lower than that of the 10 most vaccinated states.

 Quoting: CoronaCoaster

So, going on the assumption that these Messenger RNA vaccines are rewriting parts of your genetic code, if you get "boosters" every 9-12 months, eventually will it completely rewrite your code and make you into something other than human?

It looks like both group's numbers (most vaccinated vs. least vaccinated states) fell off a cliff EXACTLY THE SAME. Just like a normal wave.

Too bad we don't have any real control group to get real data on this. It was too rushed.
