Just a general reminder for those that may have forgotten over time or that are newer. These rates of patients dying among those admitted tend to get skewed as the situation worsens. You get into a triage situation where admissions move to the most severe cases ballooning the "in hospital" death rate way out of proportion. Overall IFR (Infection Fatality Rate) will also increase because cases where quicker medical attention could have saved people is unavailable, but not to the same degree. A lot of people that will naturally pull through are simply not admitted whereas before in a unstrained medical system they would have been for observation.

What we are seeing in India is basically the worst case scenario, something we narrowly avoided in the west.
 Quoting: Dutchy20

Quite, and what a lot of the nothingburgers fail to appreciate is that, without oxygen therapy, the IFR of Covid 19 would be 5-15%
 Quoting: Diffster

in the early days of 2020, that % held near 45.was fairly consistant at that rate for a while.i do remember seeing it beyond CHINA to a few countries. after we stopped intubating and got better treatment regimens the % dropped.

can i brainstorm this morning? i am not a dr.

looking at the droppers and deaths of CHINA in the early days,i wondered if the virus had infected the brain and turned organs off. like it flipped a switch shutting down auto-functions such as breathing or pumping of the heart.

is it possable that differences from CHINA to the western diet could some how stop the virus from affecting the brain in the same way???

our diets and i think many parts of the world are considerably different than CHINA. maybe due to that our own brains are better set to avoid the virus from crossing into the brain and turning off the auto-functions.

this alone would decrease the death rate dramatically.would explain why only CHINA saw a huge number of droppers as well.

due to diet differences, i suppose it is possable that our organs filter the virus before it reaches the brain.kidney,liver,etc.

It's one of the unsolved mysteries of this pandemic. Why did China get droppers but other places didn't.

I don't know if diet difference could explain it. Maybe a poor diet could, but that wouldn't explain why people with a poor diet in other countries didn't drop.

I have two theories. There could be something genetical with the chinese that makes them vulnerable to dropping from a virus like this one - and it's related to the hypoxia process that it gives people.

Second theory is pollution. This could also play into the first theory. The pollution is insanely bad in China and would contribute to people suffering quickly if they had pre-existing lung conditions, breathing conditions.

Yesterday saw UK's third consecutive day of increase in the 7-day case average.

Today saw UK's fourth consecutive day of increase in the 7-day case average. I'm pretty sure the last time cases increased for so many consecutive days was during the monster wave of the UK variant during December/January!

LOLOL, last summer wasn't alright in Texas or Florida or Arizona or Georgia. Did we forget about that already?

Cruisewuflu
 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

For last summer, seasonality could have been a factor in keeping infections extremely low in many places, and in others much lower than they would have been otherwise.

The thing is, even if seasonality is a factor in helping suppress many infections, despite that there is still the human behavior element which can contribute to infection growth.

IMO, what likely happened last summer is exactly that. Seasonality did help to keep infections very low in most states, but in the southern states where people gathered indoors in air conditioned environments to get away from the humid, hot conditions outside the seasaonlity effect was negated. That could explain why we saw infections climb significantly in the south but not much elsewhere.

But remember, even the south saw a more severe wave in the winter than the summer. Seasonality.

Two more Russian vaccines: What we do and don't know

Russia has approved three coronavirus vaccines — first, Sputnik-V, then EpiVacCorona and CoviVac. But clinical trials for the last two are incomplete.

Russia wants the majority of its citizens to be vaccinated against the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, by the autumn of 2021. And it appears to be pushing three homegrown vaccines to meet that goal at all costs.

All three of those vaccines have been approved prior to completing large-scale phase 3 clinical trials — an internationally recognized scientific standard that aims to ensure the safety and efficacy of vaccines.

Lol. I can't believe they actually said ivermectin should be used to end the pandemic once and for all. But, they did...

What do we know about the peer-review journal, ",The American Journal of Therapeutics"? Are they known for having much credibility? At the very least the study in question is from months ago. hmm

For one thing I know that India went nuts for Ivermectin. So much so that they credited things like Ivermectin and Hydroxycholorquine for helping them "win the fight" against covid19... But a few weeks after that is when their doom wave hit... verydamned
