A total of 75,953 confirmed and probable cases of the Covid-19 Delta variant have now been identified in the UK, new figures show.

That's up by 33,630, or 79%, on the previous week, Public Health England (PHE) says.

The most recent data shows 99% of confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus across England are the Delta variant, PHE says.

A total of 806 people in England have been admitted to hospital with the Delta variant of Covid-19 as of 14 June, new figures show.

This is a rise of 423 on the previous week, according to the data from Public Health England.

Of the 806 hospitalisations:

527 (65%) people were unvaccinated
135 (17%) were more than 21 days after their first dose of vaccine
84 (10%) were more than 14 days after their second dose.

As of 14 June, there have been 73 deaths in England of people who were confirmed as having the Delta variant and who died within 28 days of a positive test.

Of the 73 deaths:

34 (47%) were unvaccinated
10 (14%) were more than 21 days after their first dose of vaccine
26 (36%) were more than 14 days after their second dose.

Most covid deaths in UK with the Delta variant are happening in people who have been vaccinated than not vaccinated.

In the unvaccinated, 1 in every 15 hospitalizations results in a death

In the two-dose vaccinateds, 1 in every 3 hospitalizations results in a death

This doesn't give a full picture with what's going on with the vaccine though, like covid19sars2.0 said last week. The # of double vaccinateds are disproportionately made up by those at higher risk from acute infection so we're going to have to wait until more of the young adults are vaccinated to see what's what.

Having said that... A death in every 3 hospitalizations for the folks who have had two doses does seem high to me. I would be interested to see what the hospitalization-death ratio was of the higher age groups/higher risk groups during previous waves. I suspect it was similar to 1 in 3... not good.

What are COVID-19 symptoms for the so-called Delta variant?

Per the New York Post, there are a wide range of symptoms that people suffer if they’re infected with the Delta variant (which was originally discovered in India) of COVID-19. Symptoms include:

Stomach pain
Nausea
Vomiting
Loss of appetite
Hearing loss
Joint pain
New symptoms for COVID-19 in Delta variant:
Dr. Ganesh Manudhane, a Mumbai cardiologist, told Bloomberg News there’s a newer symptom he has had to treat patients for when it comes to the Delta variant — small blood clots.

“I saw three to four cases the whole of last year, and now it’s one patient a week,” Manudhane told Bloomberg.
Manudhane told Bloomberg he was surprised to find that the patients had no coagulation problems before getting COVID-19.

“We suspect it could be because of the new virus variant,” he said.

Why tho?

This could get very bad for people who are vaccinated. You extrapolate those numbers across a 20 miillion thats been vaccinates you get significant deaths.

hmm

Province in South Africa is seeing a bigger case surge NOW compared to December when the South African variant arrived on the scene.

 Quoting: CoronaCoaster

I am not a big believe in seasonality as I stated before, but there does seem to be something to it.

We did have a wave in Dec/Jan/Feb (peak summer) but whilst it broke records from our winter wave (but first wave had super tight restrictions) it didnt seem to last that long.

So it may well be summer waves are not as bad as winter ones, and there is a seasonality effect.

*quote cut here because wouldn't let me post*

The influx of HIV (immuno-comprised people) makes me wonder how many mutation factories there are now running around here.

The government did some weak restriction tightening on Tuesday, curfew is an hour earlier, restaurants close an hour before that, no alcohol sales on Fri/Sat/Sun etc

But schools stay open.

My wife made a good point, she says she thinks this is a vaccine move. Teachers are next on list to be vaccinated (right now I think its health workers and over-60's).

If they close schools despite wanting to vaxx teachers they will be sending the message that getting vaxxed is pointless.

I think its more about human behaviour than seasons.

But yes the seasons cause the behaviour.

Cant speak for warm times.

But when its cold and wet you go inside you huddle outside to keep warm etc.

But look at the UK now. Weathers not cold or wet but cases going up.
So that points its not seasonal as well.
 Quoting: Covid19sars2.0

In the temperate zones seasonal doesn't mean no or low infections in summer, it just means it's worse in winter than summer. hf

Big and important news.

This is the first mRNA vaccine study to undergo a comprehensive trial against a variety of the known variants of concern... and it failed.

Now they should do the same study for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines... if they have the courage to.

Just going to take a look at Queen Furry's page and see what she has to say about this.... aaaand yep no mention of it on her page. She is instead pretending the study never happened and would rather talk about furry suits.

The reinfection testing is a failure....

Unless they checked poop - there is an inherent normalcy bias going on. Folks are assuming that reinfection will occur and testing will always work.
 Quoting: CleverCreator

Right. Asymptomatic folks too who more often than not don't go for a test if they are re-infected.

The best study that was done on re-infection was a very large study in Denmark conducted last year before the variants of concern emerged. They tested an large amount of their population regardless of whether they had symptoms or not during the first and second waves. They found the risk of re-infection after 6 months for older folks was 50% and in the younger folks it was 20%. That was bad enough and then add the variants of concern it just gets worse.

26 (36%) were more than 14 days after their second dose.
 Quoting: ParamedicUK

So once again more deaths in the vac group
26% died in the vac group
About 6% from the unvac

But does show the drop in hosptial admissions.
 Quoting: Covid19sars2.0

Let's say for the sake of argument that the vaccine does help stop some hospitalizations. When there is a return to life without restrictions and the infections inevitibly go up more during current wave (or a later wave if we're talking about the U.S.), the question is will that be enough to prevent healthcare systems from being overwhelmed?

Add to the mix waning immunity over time from either infection or vaccine, further new variants of concern added to the mix and new vaccine production not able to keep up, also seasonality making virus spread easier.

Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer in England seems to think it won't be enough. Yesterday he warned of a winter surge...

Whitty said there were “really quite a lot of things that we need to worry about, particularly I think this next surge, and then going into the following winter”.

So if England is on course for a winter surge, then the rest of Europe and U.S. would be aswell...
