Thr UK's weekly Covid-19 Infection survey (run by the Office for National Statistics) shows that the outbreak is still growing.

[link to www.ons.gov.uk (secure)]

The daily new case numbers (positive tests), which have been falling for the past week, are no longer an accurate guide to the level of infection in the UK.

Some tweets from Furry earlier in the year when she was humming a different tune saying viral load levels had a higher significance with regard to transmission than they do now.

...

You really need to look up what that term means. I found out the hard way one night when my buddy who did multiple tours overseas almost blew my brains out after having a bad day and a few too many drinks.

I'm sure there are many people who have PTSD from severe COVID infections especially those placed on ventialtors. It manifests in many ways, those who have it from COVID probably are less likely to be the shootey-in-the-face kind.

But as far as my co-worker goes, he was asymptomatic the 1st time and the 2nd time average flu symptoms with a couple of weird ones added in like a burning sensation on his back.

Either way not traumatic enough to trigger PTSD in a normal well adjusted adult.
 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

As someone who teaches psychology, I'd beg to differ with your opinion, RW. PTSD takes a lot of forms, and what triggers it is different for everyone. Certainly, the type of PTSD one gets from a combat situation is going to be different in the way it manifests from that caused by serious illness ... but the past couple of years have been pretty traumatic for just about everyone. Cumulative stressors can cause PTSD. It doesn't have to be a single traumatic event. I'm not weighing in on whether your friend does or does not have it, but I am challenging your narrow definition.
 Quoting: Doommonkey

One of the biggest issues with PTSD is that it is very hard to diagnose. For some strange reason some people seem to love the fact they have PTSD and use it to get attention. I’m not saying that is always the case. Traumatic events also affect people differently due to their make up. I have been in 20 years and have seen and dealt with most things you can imagine - I don’t feel I have PTSD but am I just one job away from getting it. I have flashbacks and bad dreams but it stops there. On the other side we get newbies who are off work in a matter of a few months and leave with “PTSD”. It’s a weird one for sure!
 Quoting: ParamedicUK

Yes, you are right, ParaUK. I used to work as a clinician, before I chose a purely academic path, and my specialty was trauma. Therefore, I've seen a lot of PTSD in real life, and I have it myself (though I have done a lot of work on it, so it doesn't affect me too much.)

It IS hard to diagnose, as are most mental disorders, because there is so much overlap with other disorders. Do some people use it to get attention? Absolutely -- and I think these are the types of people who would latch on to any label that they thought would serve them well in that regard.

You are right, too, that one's makeup determines the way PTSD affects a person. Some people are extremeley resilient, and can do the kind of work you do, and manage to endure it without too much damage. Others cannot, and are traumatized very easily. Be careful ... if you are getting flashbacks and dreams, you are right on that line .... it sounds like you have it mostly under control, but I am glad you realize that you are "one job away from getting it." My opionion (take that for what it is, or isn't, worth) is that you probably do have some PTSD, but that you also have enough coping skills that it doesn't yet interfere with your ability to function. Practice extra self-care when you can ... that goes a long way to creating a buffer between you and that one job that might push you over the edge.

Some people are a lot less resilient, and cross over into the definition of PTSD with fewer identifiable stressors. This is usually based on early experiences, as well as what coping strategies they have going into a stressful situation. It can take one totally by suprise ... and it isn't always evident to others (no face-shooty behavior, for example.) A person might just become frozen, or withdraw. It really is different for everyone.
 Quoting: Doommonkey

Hello Doommonkey. You don't know me but I feel like I know y'all because I visit this thread everyday, multiple times a day. I have a diagnosis of complex PTSD and dissociative identity disorder. I've been in and out of therapy most of my life and a few years ago I decided I wanted EMDR. I thought it would be "magic" and hey, presto, my brain would be fixed, lol. I think I can be forgiven for thinking like that because many refer to it as magic, in that no one seems to really know why it works.

My last therapist screened me for DID before proceeding with EMDR and skidded to a halt when she learned just how dissociative I am. She kept telling me she was not comfortable treating me because she would do me no more harm. I dissociated regularly with her so I understand. So no EMDR for me.

I just wanted to thank you for your post that brought clarity to the subject of PTSD. It is a little traumatizing to even read things from people who don't get it, so thank you.

I wish the best for and send love to all who suffer with it.

Oh. Oh. Oh. UK case decline keeps slowing.

The week on week decreases have been -50%, -40%, -22% and today -18%. Cases could be increasing again in a week or two if this keeps up.

Hell, I'm nervous about having my blood drawn later today, to check if I have any antibodies... but I think I do need that information for my own sanity. I'll double mask and wear eye protection, and get in and out as quickly as I can. If I were a betting woman, I'd put small money down on no antibodies being the answer, though I would hope to lose that bet. I went through the hell that was the aftermath of Pfizer dose 2 (3 weeks of it!) so the least I could get is a few antibodies. We'll see.
 Quoting: Doommonkey

Don't just check for titers. Have a doctor order an antibodies test for prior infection. My daughter's pediatrician did that and I found out my daughter already had Covid. I have been sick with Covid symptoms for a week and a half but my doctor also ordered a blood test for prior infection. I did it yesterday.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2567830

The test I'm getting will show prior infection as well as vaccination reaction (or so the lab says.) I ordered it myself through Labcorp, which you can do without a doctor's order ... and it specifically says it will show prior infection with Covid in addition to vax reaction. We'll see ... whatever the result, it should be interesting to have some more information. To the best of my knowledge, I have not had Covid.
Looks like freedom but it feels like death. It's something in between I guess... it's closing time.
