That is some good emotional manipulation you are attempting of me, Seer777. A screaming two week old infant probably can trigger probably any dog into wanting to get the eff out of there or attack. I do not know which. Mostly since this most likely dependent on the dog's personality.

I also do not know why you believe anything I said in my previous post, Seer777, to be excuses. Everything I said is as factual from my personal experiences as I can really say. It is you, Seer777, who is busy making up as many excuses as possible in order to hate as much as possible on apparently any dog breed there is. Things are just getting muddled with all of your foolishness here, Seer777. Are you going to remain as upset as really can be over this one pitbull dog attack in many months' time, Seer777?

As for what was said in the OP's OP, Seer777, maybe that actually did happen, maybe it did not. Since I was not there I can not take such news for granted. Especially since a child was the victim of a dog attack.

Myth #1: It's the owner not the breed

The outdated debate, "It's the owner, not the breed," has caused the pit bull problem to grow into a 35-year old problem.1 Designed to protect pit bull breeders and owners, the slogan ignores the genetic history of the breed and blames these horrific maulings -- inflicted by the pit bull's genetic "hold and shake" bite style -- on environmental factors. While environment plays a role in a pit bull's behavior, it is genetics that leaves pit bull victims with permanent and disfiguring injuries.

The pit bull's genetic traits are not in dispute. Many appellate courts agree that pit bulls pose a significant danger to society and can be regulated accordingly. Some of the genetic traits courts have identified include: unpredictability of aggression, tenacity ("gameness" the refusal to give up a fight), high pain tolerance and the pit bull's "hold and shake" bite style.2 According to forensic medical studies, similar injuries have only been found elsewhere on victims of shark attacks.3

Purveyors of this myth also cannot account for the many instances in which pit bull owners and their family members are victimized by their pet dogs. From 2005 to 2019, pit bulls killed 346 Americans, about one citizen every 16 days. Of these deaths, 53% involved a family member and a household pit bull.4 Notably, in the first 8 months of 2011, nearly half of those killed by a pit bull was its owner. One victim was an "avid supporter" of BadRap, a recipient of Michael Vick's dogs.5

About the founder
Colleen Lynn resides in Austin, Texas and operates Lynn Media Group. On June 17th, 2007, she was attacked for approximately 5-seconds by a leashed pit bull while jogging in her former Seattle neighborhood. She was hospitalized for two days at Harborview Medical Center after undergoing surgery to repair a severe bone fracture.

Hmm..seeing some bias and an agenda...

Prohibit felons from ownership
Pit bulls were selectively bred for an activity that is now a felony in all 50 states: dogfighting. Pit bulls are the "chosen" breed for drug dealers, gang members and other violent offenders and as such, make up the vast majority of dogs shot by police officers

Oh..we might be into something...

Who we are
DogsBite.org is a public education website about dangerous dog breeds, chiefly pit bulls. We are the primary 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to putting the safety of humans before dogs and the principal source of information on this topic that is not owned, controlled, or funded by dog breeders, dog advocacy, veterinarian or animal welfare groups.

So...we have a lady with an agenda who disagrees with any possible expert because of a terrible incident - in which I hope the owner was justly punished.

That makes me somewhat dubious of the information presented

You can show SOL this list. He will ignore the overwhelming fact of which dog is killing people and other animals. All he will have is personal experience and deflections to argue with. If you can look at this list and still argue that Pitt Bulls are not the problem and its something else then you are mentally ill. Usually the first response will be "so we should kill all the dogs on this list" which of course is deflection.

They are a strong breed and like any larger dog require knowledgeable training in order to be well adjusted and fully safe in society (small dogs require this just as much, despite the threat level being lower)

This takes time, dedication, patience and love.

What I would like to know is the real history of the dog.
I'm not defending this pitbull, but I own a pit/lab mix that just turned 5.

I would like to know....

Were these the original owners?
Nowhere in the article does it state this, SO, you don't know if the dog had been properly raised/disciplined.

The mom states the pitbull was raised around kids and never showed signs of aggression. This in no way clarifies that it was raised with this boy.

More often than not, when you hear these stories, they are either dogs that someone acquired later and didn't raise them from birth. OR, the dogs are in a 2+ pack. Packs can always be unpredictable and dangerous in my opinion because they feed off each other's behavior.

Either way, kids don't know boundaries with animals and will often test limits like pulling tails, etc. So NO, they should NEVER be left unsupervised with pets, period.

I have a lot of time, dedication and love invested in my pet too..and due my own PTSD from watching my dog get mauled to death as a small child..same breed as my current dog, if an unleashed pitbull comes up to my dog..even if friendly I may not be able to control my reaction.

Even if you are confident..people that don't know you..are not and may have underlying fear that cause them to overreact in said situations.

PTSD is real. So are the flashbacks, the nightmares, the lingering fear and avoidance.

When confronted again by that scenario, the reaction can be instant blind violence to quell the threat.

Not saying your dogs are a threat..I'm saying someone with PTSD that confronts an unleashed dog that fits a profile..can be.

It's funny watching these ass hats run in circles. They would defend serial killers if given the chance."Bundy didn't eat everybody he knew!", "Here's a pic of him playing with his kids, he's soooo evil!"

I understand why people get heated in regard to this topic. I try to keep my tone civil such that I provide argument that breaks through emotional barriers which blame the victim and not the owner/breed.

Thank you Seer.

They are a strong breed and like any larger dog require knowledgeable training in order to be well adjusted and fully safe in society (small dogs require this just as much, despite the threat level being lower)

This takes time, dedication, patience and love.

I can confidently walk mine off-leash thru any situation (and have). I speak from experience with this.

They are not like any other large dog you spoon. If so then Lions are just like any other cat. Wolfs are just like any other dog. You walk your dog off-leash because like all Pitt owners you are a clueless and don't care about others. You'll do this until your dog kills some kid then you will blame the kid.

 Quoting: Seer777

Oh I understand. My base rule is if their dog is leashed, I will place mine on one and make sure their dog is friendly if we cross paths before interaction.

I've had people freak out at the Shepard before, perhaps the most amusing being a cop I helped apprehend a fleeing gent.

"I saw you run out and grab him and I thought "Brilliant!" Then I saw the giant dog and thought "oh god, please don't bite the guy!!"

I've had little dogs run up to mine, then had owners scream at me that my dog is dangerous when they notice there dog has run off (on or off lead makes no difference).

Fear can cause quite irrational responses.

Yup...he actually read the link he posted.

I tried to quote a few parts, something hit the ban filter.

Pit Bull Types

Owners of pit bull-type dogs deal with a strong breed stigma,44 however controlled studies have not identified this breed group as disproportionately dangerous. The pit bull type is particularly ambiguous as a "breed" encompassing a range of pedigree breeds, informal types and appearances that cannot be reliably identified. Visual determination of dog breed is known to not always be reliable.45 And witnesses may be predisposed to assume that a vicious dog is of this type.

It should also be considered that the incidence of pit bull-type dogs' involvement in severe and fatal attacks may represent high prevalence in neighborhoods that present high risk to the young children who are the most common victim of severe or fatal attacks. And as owners of stigmatized breeds are more likely to have involvement in criminal and/or violent acts46—breed correlations may have the owner's behavior as the underlying causal factor.

Aggressive Breeds

Based on behavioral assessments and owner surveys the breeds that were more aggressive towards people were small to medium-sized dogs such as the collies, toy breeds and spaniels.33,34,35,36,37 For example, a survey of general veterinary clientele in Canada (specifically practices in New Brunswick, Novia Scotia, and Prince Edward Island) identified Lhasa Apso, Springer spaniel and Shih Tsu as more likely to bite.43

While small dogs may be more aggressive their size means they are less likely to inflict serious bite injury except on vulnerable individuals or as part of a pack attack, which also allows dogs to seriously or injury healthy older children or adults.38,39 Referrals for aggression problems more closely approximate the breeds implicated in serious bite attacks, probably because owners are more likely to seek treatment for aggression in dogs that are large enough to be dangerous. Larger dogs (regardless of breed) are implicated in more attacks on humans40 and other dogs.41

The prevalence of particular dog breeds can also change rapidly over time, often influenced by distinct peaks of popularity for specific breeds. It seems that increased popularity is sometimes followed by increases in bite reports in some large breeds. For example there was a distinct peak in American Kennel Club registration of Rottweilers30 between 1990 and 1995, and they come at the top of the list of 'biting breeds' for the first time in studies of bites causing hospitalization in the late 90s and early 2000s

In her book Pit Bull: The Battle over an American Icon, author Bronwen Dickey writes that DogsBite.org accuses several organizations of being "co-opted by the 'pit bull lobby', a shady cabal that supporters of the site imply is financed by dogfighters."[14] In an interview with Psychology Today, Dickey says "The site's founder is also contemptuous of people in the relevant sciences, including those at the AVMA, the CDC, the Animal Behavior Society, etc. She refers to them as 'science whores,' which alone is enough to discredit her claims."[15]

In an article in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, R. Scott Nolen states that "DogsBite.org's claim that pit bull–type dogs were responsible for 65 percent of the deaths during that 12-year period (2005-2016) is disputed by some groups as inaccurate and misleading. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, for example, says identifying a dog's breed accurately is difficult, even for professionals, and visual recognition is known to not always be reliable."[2]

Very much so. Knowing a dog is aptly trained/friendly when it is coming toward you suddenly..is not something that can be gauged quickly by eyesight.

Little dogs can be mean too..they just don't kill/maim people on a regular basis like we're seeing with these events. I watch my dog at all times around other dogs and any small children. Like a hawk.
