I have a Queensland heeler. She is extremely vicious. Anytime kids ride their bikes or skateboards on the sidewalk past my house, my dog runs to our 6' chainlink fence, lunges about halfway up the fence and latches onto the fence and throws her hind end, from side to side, while snarling like a rabid Dingo. Should I have her put down?

My suitemate in college had a pit named Samson - a huge, strong pit.

They're ok most of the time as long as they see you as the alpha dog.

If however they don't see you as the alpha dog, they've got a real moody streak in them that you don't want to trigger. And if something spooks them and they don't see you as the alpha, that's when they go off.

And it's usually bad.

A pit is no family dog.

I grew up around German Shepherds. Still an effective guard dog, but they don't have that moody streak of a pit bulldog.

We have a problem with pit bull attacks in America. Maybe it doesn't happen with the same frequency and savagery in Australia, as it does here. Every single week. Sometimes twice a week there is a story like this from them attacking children and babies and people.

Not to mention killing other people's pets..like I got to witness as a small child with my own dog. I'm still haunted by it..and if someone allows a deadly weapon to be off leash and maims or kills another..that people should be liable in at the exact manner if they had done it themselves.

That's how I see it. It's my opinion. One that largely shared in regard to this breed.

If one chooses one of these animals as a pet..it should be treated as a potential weapon and never left unattended or with an ability to escape a yard.

The most amazing part of the thread. Some people literally equate a dog with a human. Dogs are descended from wolves. Wolves kill people. We domesticated wolves and made them able follow simple commands. They can be sweet and loveable.

But they are not humans. And if any dog snaps and rips a little kids face off, that dog is wrong. To the people saying, what did the kid do to the dog....really? If the kid is unattended and torturing the dog, then his parents are responsible. The dog needs to be put down and the parents are charged with a crime.

6 year olds are stupid. But I highly doubt a 6 year old is torturing a dog with wire cutters or something. My sin was around 7 and he was with my sisters dogN small breed mutt. My kid accidentally stepped on his paw, immediately caught himself and thebdig was not hurt. Dog yelped, growled and ran away. I toom my kid over there a few mote times while they had the dog and the dog growled at him and acted angry. If I had left my kid alone with the dog, the dog might well have bit him. The fucking thing was a little asshole. They ended up getting rid of it.

Point being, dogs do not reason like humans. They do not think like us. Anyone with a large strong breed is taking a chance with kids around and absolutely stupid. Dogs can be nice. They are also domesticated killers. Anyone acting like they are humans or on par with humans should not be allowed to own one.

dogs are fun , loving , sweet , but make no mistake , they can and do hurt humans . pits are to unpredictable , and way too powerfull , to be left alone around anyone , grown men , athletes would be a sorry match against the pit bull. but what do i know.

Those dogs are horrible. They just have fucked up genetics from the start... They are essentially mutts! Not a true dog breed, and it shows.

I'd also sadly guess your dog is not overly, or at all, socialised with other dogs due to this fear you possess.

I had a German Shepard maul my Nans Maltese while I was walking it as a kid (it survived). I did not let it turn me into a "hate all Shepards" person - I interacted with others of its breed and realised hating and fearing all of them from the actions of a lone individual was stupid.

Two weeks ago our neighbor's pit bull puppy killed and presumably ate two four-week-old adorable kittens who had wandered from under our fence. Neighbor looked around, she saw no trace of them, but I heard the attack (8:45 on a Tuesday morning) and it was horrific. I'm still depressed.
