The ground is not as rocky near the surface (rock absorbs energy). so the waves travel further. If this were a 6 or especially 7+ (New Madrid fault), you would definitely have some serious issues many miles from the epicenter. |

The eastern Tennessee seismic zone was pretty active summer/fall of 2019. Several 2.5 - 2.8 EQ's near the Watts Barr Nuclear plant near Sweetwater Tennessee last year. |
