People actually look behind the front of the shelves. Some store chains do only a one row facing they are cheap but more professional chains do a 2 row facing which makes it harder to spot holes. They also spread out on products they do have so when you see a 5 ft section of shit canned goods that is a dead give away there is shortages. Here in N GA all the stores are doing the face up on shelves these days. Yes there is shortages of a lot of different things. Most of which just doesnt make sense. e I bet most on here dont even know pharmacies only keep a 2 to 3 day supply of over the counter products. Look at those shelves sometime. They have false backers etc... |

Quoting: Yellow Bird in TX If there is a shortage of everything .... you had better dam make sure you have prepped up on your necessary medicines... Fill all you scripts that have refills and get the 90 day supply. Yes but that seems impossible around here. My pharmacy won't give out more than a month's supply. I asked - they said the insurance company won't allow - and I said I'd pay cash and they said sorry can't do that. Your dr needs to send in a 90 day script Right! Thank you. I should have realized that. |

I work for a company that manufactures "snack food" ... with most of our sales being event and institutional sales, not retail. The initial shock in March screwed up the retail/non-retail balance and we have been "pivoting" ever since at work. People panic bought in the beginning at the same time supply chains had to pivot in order for manufacturers to keep selling. NOW The "level of lockdown/open" map probably looks like boiling water. In my opinion, what we see in stores on top of the supply chain blip ... is businesses raiding supermarkets for supplies as they re-open because their regular supply chains are broken. As soon as restaurants opened for outdoor dining here, various random items were cleaned off the shelves (mayonnaise, napkins, hand soap) ... same with salons, doctor's offices, etc. They have to stock their cabinets from walmart while the hours/days/weeks of operation are swinging so wildly. The same with construction supplies ... "essential" vs. "non essential" construction opening and closing. Also, I'm seeing lots of new brands and brands from different regions on shelves as manufacturers and distributors "pivot". |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79128185 One local grocer keeps perpetually “reorganizing” so it’s hard to make out what’s going on, but you can see there is a lot missing if you stop and think about it. Lots more candy and worthless stuff being displayed, it seems. Yesterday, I noticed they were down to just the store brand water & Aquafina, and there wasn’t much. Has anyone encountered Lysol spray since the panic buying in March? I saw it one time. And does anyone else see Mexican branded paper towels and toilet paper in their grocery stores? They have American brands now too, but also 3 or 4 diff Mexican brands. Weird. I found lots of Lysol Neutra Air at Dollar General store where I live in Missouri. This was about a week ago. I bought 3. There was around 10 on the shelf. |

Also, I'm seeing lots of new brands and brands from different regions on shelves as manufacturers and distributors "pivot". I don't know, this seems way to rational and makes to much sense to be true. You must be a shill or something. The same is true with recreational equipment like kayaks and bicycles. Around here (Southern NJ), there are lots of places to kayak and bike. Every middle class family who would have gone somewhere else this summer and rented equipment ... is not only fixing up their back yard, they are riding bikes and kayaking. Dick's, Bass Pro Shops, REI ... I even went to Ron Jon Surf Shop and random places that wouild stock some kind of kayak somewhere ... they were all out of kayaks by June, in stores and online. I don't think that the kayak and bicycle supply chains are broken or it's due to a raw material shortage or anything like that. Retailers probably never sold so many kayaks and bikes in a month as they did in NJ in May. They normally wouldn't restock. They normally wouldn't sell out or anything close. And guess what? I was desperate to find a kayak, too. And a bigger bike for my kid. I have NEVER seen so many kayaks on trucks and trailers in this area in my life! Bikes, too. It's all down to the staycation around here. |

(For the bike, we're going to take an old one to a bike shop and have it fixed up.) (I think a lot of families need "one more" boke or kayak/tube/boat to cobble together an excursion, like we did.) |

We called that "Faking It Out" when I was a retail manager. Can someone explain what this means? Are you saying they're filling the shelves with several aisles of the the same product(s) to hide the scarcity of other products? |

Yeah I was at a Fred Meyer and I noticed a lot of candy filling a whole aisle where it shouldn't be, thought it was strange. Noticed this when this a started. A lot of where the meats were supposed to be were replaced by hotdogs etc. Which usually were in a different spot. deff appeared they were making an illusion of looking full. And the most was cut up/arranged in such a way with about half full to make it look full. |
