You know how many covens are in witch-i-tau? (the 19th letter phonetically) OP doesn't seem to give credence at all to total hyper-inflation of witchcraft is going on right now.

Yeah, well it's now pronounced tau. Actually wiki has the pronunciation as taw

"WITCH-i-taw"

I would love to hear about the witchcraft though if you have something to enlighten me with like links or something. I'll even take your enlightenment without links.

Nice work with incomplete information OP. I also live in Kansas and you're forgetting one thing: The sheer number of anti-maskers that are not following the mask mandates. Without full buy-in, there is no way to get an accurate portrayal of the effectiveness of the mandates. I appreciate your research, but unless you can prove that everyone is following the mandates (they aren't) then you can't give an accurate picture of what is going on.

Be careful quoting Dave Trabert and the Kansas Policy Institute. They are leftovers from the Brownback mentality in the state and that type of thinking is why we became a national laughing stock over the last six years.

Re: Mask Shenanigans in Kansas
Yesterday, this article also broke, but I am still in the process of running numbers to confirm the claims in the article:

City Council To Vote On Extending City Mask Ordinance In Wichita

"The Wichita mask ordinance is set to expire on Tuesday. There will also be a vote Tuesday to possibly extend the mandate ordinance until at least September 8.

. . .

'It looks to me from hospital numbers that mask-wearing has made a difference,'” said Claycomb. 'And so I think maybe we need to do that (mask ordinance) for a little bit longer.'”

So, the easiest number-crunching of all my projects is the hospitalizations out of Sedgwick County. Yes the number dropped by 8 on the last report, but once more the spike occurred during mask wearing not prior to mask wearing.

Here are the numbers:

8/10 64 hospitalizations; 8/3 72 hospitalizations; 7/27 63 hospitalizations; 7/20 58 hospitalizations; 7/13 54 hospitalizations; 7/6 32 hospitalizations; 6/29 20 hospitalizations. (Mandate went into effect 7/3)

So, I haven't updated lately and since I updated the thread today with another article, I thought I would see how we are trending now, when the claim all along that masks work and we are getting further into the mask wearing than we were the last time I updated.

8/24 59 hospitalizations; 8/17 63 hospitalizations.

On the latest update (8/24), it appears there are more in ICU than since the chart begins (6/29) with a total of 35 in ICU.

But, but, but I thought masks were making a difference and affecting hospitalizations.

No, I think you have missed the point. Officials are claiming that it is making a difference, not me. They are going before the media saying they are working and numbers are going down in mandated counties, not me. I can attest to the fact that at least in the Wichita area, I have not seen people not wearing their masks, what with threat of fine and all. I don't know what part of the State you are in. Are you in a mandated area or not?

OP: Like you I live in Wichita.

I haven't trusted Dr. Norman [I recall his first Topeka presser where he showed up in a t-shirt/unbuttoned white smock and mumbled his "report"] or Gov Kelly [I really DESPISE her double-speak] since the first words that spewed from their mouths; meanwhile, our own Sedgwick County cadaverous "Cryptkeeper" lurches before the cameras like an extra in a George Romero slasher film.

And, our local media are just as biased as the national scum as they promote everything proposed that will make our city miserable, with the relentlessly self-promoting KWCH the worst of the lot.

Here's something I've noticed since day ONE of this pandemic, long before masks were even suggested: I haven't seen ONE single person coughing, sniffling or exhibiting any of the usual symptoms of seasonal colds/flu. NOT ONE. Usually in an average flu season when I'm out shopping I'll see several and immediately move to another aisle, or if they really look sick I'll stop inhaling and only slowly exhale until I'm clear of them.

Bottom line for me is that we've been royally lied-to since this outbreak began and like you, I trust NO ONE in KS. Or, elsewhere for that matter!

BTW: Now retired, I have a HazMat background with the federal government [where I actually handled deadly live infectious agents] and although I was an early proponent of masks, I changed my tune last April after studying independent data for myself and even then the numbers just didn't add up. And when people started wearing bandannas for protection [they might as well have worn a pair of pantyhose over their heads!] I REALLY became incensed with the levels of forced compliance that were heaped on the populace.

Today I only wear a mask due to the threat of a fine or being refused service in a store, but have seen many who don't wear one... and they invariably attract disapproving glares from other shoppers as they do so.

But what bothers me just as much is how quickly those masks have become fashion statements as herds of mindless sheep willingly embrace social restrictions based upon media-generated hysteria.

Re: Mask Shenanigans in Kansas
So, I have been spending all night crunching the numbers for the rise in cases in mask-mandated counties versus non-mask-mandated counties.

There are a total of 17 counties that had a mask mandate since July 3rd. That leaves a total of 88 counties that were not under mask mandate.

The total number of cases for counties that had mask mandates (17 counties) on July 3rd when the mandate went into effect was 7,799. As of August 10th, the last day we have numbers for those 17 counties, there were a total of 20,020 cases in those counties. This is a rise of 12,221 cases over a 38-day period with an average of 321.6 cases per day.

The total number of cases for counties that did not have mask mandates (88 total counties) on July 3rd when the mandate went into effect was 8,120. As of August 10th, the last day we have numbers for those 88 counties, there were a total of 11,710 cases in those counties. This is a rise of 3,590 cases over a 38-day period with an average of 94.5 cases per day.

Here is a breakdown by day reported of the increase on that day for the counties with mask mandates (17 counties)

8/10 812 new cases
8/7 675 new cases
8/5 599 new cases
8/3 818 new cases

7/13 1,155 new cases
7/10 749 new cases
7/8 606 new cases
7/6 791 new cases
7/3 738 new cases

Here is a breakdown by day reported of the increase on that day for the counties without mask mandates (88 counties)

8/10 280 new cases
8/7 246 new cases
8/5 242 new cases
8/3 246 new cases

EDIT: All numbers have been edited to now include Harvey County (17th) county as well due to the fact that Harvey County was a county that was under mask mandate at the time I did these numbers, but which I was unaware of, per my post below.
 Quoting: TrustNoOneKS

So out of curiosity, I decided to take a look and see how we were doing numbers-wise for the mask-mandated counties versus the non-mask-mandated counties since my last analysis on August 10th. Here is what my findings are:

The total number of cases for counties that had mask mandates (17 counties) on August 10th, the last time I figured the statistics, was 20,020. As of August 24th, the last day we have numbers for those 17 counties, there were a total of 24,924 cases in those counties. This is a rise of 4,904 cases over a 14-day period with an average of 350.3 cases per day.

The total number of cases for counties that did not have mask mandates (88 total counties) on August 10th, the last time I figured the statistics, was 11,710. As of August 24th, the last day we have numbers for those 88 counties, there were a total of 13,477 cases in those counties. This is a rise of 1,767 cases over a 14-day period with an average of 126.2 cases per day.

Here is a breakdown by day reported of the increase on that day for the counties with mask mandates (17 counties)

8/24 1,020 cases
8/21 726 cases
8/19 530 cases
8/17 985 cases
8/14 1,002 cases
8/12 641 cases

Here is a breakdown by day reported of the increase on that day for the counties without mask mandates (88 counties)

8/24 525 cases
8/21 240 cases
8/19 193 cases
8/17 297 cases
8/14 336 cases
8/12 176 cases

Re: Mask Shenanigans in Kansas
So to make things more readable for the above data, I've decided to just combine the two charts (August 10th and August 24th) so that they read consecutively to see the numbers all together.

Here is a breakdown by day reported of the increase on that day for the counties with mask mandates (17 counties)

8/24 1,020 cases
8/21 726 cases
8/19 530 cases
8/17 985 cases
8/14 1,002 cases
8/12 641 cases
8/10 812 new cases
8/7 675 new cases
8/5 599 new cases
8/3 818 new cases
7/31 688 new cases
7/29 550 new cases
7/27 817 new cases
7/24 740 new cases
7/22 621 new cases
7/20 1,075 new cases
7/17 806 new cases
7/15 721 new cases
7/13 1,155 new cases
7/10 749 new cases
7/8 606 new cases
7/6 791 new cases
7/3 738 new cases

Here is a breakdown by day reported of the increase on that day for the counties without mask mandates (88 counties)

8/24 525 cases
8/21 240 cases
8/19 193 cases
8/17 297 cases
8/14 336 cases
8/12 176 cases
8/10 280 new cases
8/7 246 new cases
8/5 242 new cases
8/3 246 new cases
7/31 254 new cases
7/29 148 new cases
7/27 246 new cases
7/24 265 new cases
7/22 149 new cases
7/20 294 new cases
7/17 226 new cases
7/15 156 new cases
7/13 292 new cases
7/10 244 new cases
7/8 111 new cases
7/6 191 new cases
7/3 191 new cases

The basic figures for averages are as follows:

On August 10th, the rise in cases in mask-mandated counties rose an average 321.6 cases per day over a 38-day period from July 3rd through August 10th and the rise in cases rose an average of 350.3 cases over a 14-day period from August 10th through August 24th.

On August 10th, the rise in cases in non-mask-mandated counties rose an average of 94.5 cases per day over a 38-day period from July 3rd through August 10th and the rise in cases rose an average of 126.2 cases per day over a 14-day period from August 10th through August 24th.

applause2 Beautifully stated! I love it.

It's great having input from someone with your prior work history.

I'm actually glad you shared what you are seeing here in Wichita. I actually went to curbside pickup at both Dillons and Wal-Mart because I refuse to mask up, so I didn't know what it looked like inside the stores, just my brief viewing of people going in and out as I do my pickup.

When my cat was gravely ill before he died, I did mask up in an emergency to get him something that I could perhaps coax him into eating in person twice and I didn't see anyone else not masked up inside the store. I can count on one hand the number of times I have had to mask up. Once when we went and got a new car and once when we got our new couches. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the car dealership and the furniture store were not forcing the issue and felt relieved to pull my mask all the way down. In the car dealership, several of the employees actually talked about how they know this is all political. There is also another mom and pop store that I do go to weekly and they don't strictly enforce, so I don't pull the mask up there, but 95% of the customers are masked. I will not mention the actual businesses by name though because you know we have that snitch line here in Wichita and I don't want to get any of them in trouble.

I too have yet to see anyone exhibiting any obvious signs of being sick either in public, both pre-mask mandate, and post-mask mandate.

But what bothers me just as much is how quickly those masks have become fashion statements as herds of mindless sheep willingly embrace social restrictions based upon media-generated hysteria.

applause2 Beautifully stated!

Sorry to hear about your cat - I remember that sweet animal curled up on a sofa from the picture you once used as your avatar here on GLP! Speaking of cats, there's been a nasty killer virus this year floating around among the feral colony I feed out here in the SE part of town. I'm surprised the local media hasn't latched onto -and exploited- that like they have everything else.

It's always GREAT to read your threads! Keep up the good work!

Thanks bunches! hf

I didn't know about the recent issues with the ferals. I miss feeding my feral kitties at my old apartment complex and watching the kittens play, but have found at least one around here that I have been feeding. I don't think the one around here is a true feral, but more an abandoned family kitty. She's super sweet and I even let her come in for a few minutes at a time sometimes. Of course there are hissy fits all around.

I really do miss my Hagar and it was just so shocking. He was only 8 and even the vet was shocked by the blood work when it came back. tissue

Re: Mask Shenanigans in Kansas
So, another interesting thing I have noted is that Dr. Norman says only 15 counties have mask mandates. From the research I did yesterday, I found this list of 15 counties:

[link to www.kansaschamber.org (secure)]

I don't know which counties he is using for the 15-county count because in all the articles I've seen mentioning this count they don't list the counties and his wonky chart doesn't list counties either, but I have assumed it's the 15 counties above. I wonder if the 16th county, which I am rightly using, that he is not using is Sedgwick even though a face-mask mandate was put into effect county-wide on July 10th by the County Health Officer and even though Wichita had a mandate that went into effect on July 3rd with Governor Kelly's order.

Emergency order mandates mask wearing in Sedgwick County

"Less than a week after the Sedgwick County Commission opted out of the governor's mask mandate, the counties health officer says they are now required.

Dr. Garold Minns signed an emergency order on Wednesday after weighing the number of new cases and hospital admissions.

. . .

The order takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday morning, July 10, 2020 and will remain in place until at least midnight Sunday night, August 9, 2020."

[link to knss.radio.com (secure)]

Boy, that would really make his non-mask-mandated county numbers screwy if Sedgwick County is the one county I couldn't account for.

Today, I am seeing an article for a county that I did not include because I wasn't seeing it listed anywhere. So, now I am seeing that there is now a mandate for Harvey County, which makes it county number 17 and also alters my numbers as well:

Harvey County Commission extends face mask order through Sept. 15

"The Harvey County Commission voted unanimously at its commission meeting today to extend a local order requiring face masks to be worn in Harvey County through Sept. 15 in a continued effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19."

[link to www.ksn.com (secure)]

So, I guess we have another county that is also going to skew the numbers that Dr. Norman claims are for non-mask counties versus mask counties. Is he doing this intentionally to make it look like the masks are working, just like his wonky chart he used last week? Also, who knows how many other counties there are now that have mandates that I just don't know about just like I didn't with Harvey.
 Quoting: TrustNoOneKS

I just want to update that Sedgwick County does continue under a mask mandate until September 7th, with the county public health officer adding that he may make it go through the end of the year.

Sedgwick County mask mandate could be extended

"The Sedgwick County mask mandate could be extended through the end of the year if the Sedgwick County Health Officer gets his way.

. . .

That extension pushes the mask mandate at least through the Labor Day weekend."

[link to foxkansas.com]

End of the year? It's sickening how totalitarian the State officials are being on this.

I really hope this committee listens to him!

Attorney General says pandemic is highlighting legal issues with emergency powers law

"Attorney General Derek Schmidt said there are many legal problems with how Kansas is operating during a state of emergency. So, he wants to prevent problems in future emergencies.

Schmidt and Governor Laura Kelly have clashed multiple times during the coronavirus outbreak.

. . .

He wants lawmakers to fix the wording in the law or the state could be hit with lawsuits.

. . .

Schmidt worried that lawmakers might be giving the governor powers of the legislative branch, which he said isn’t allowed.

. . .

He also said a constitutional amendment could be an option to put to the voters to determine how government should operate during an emergency."

But, but, but I thought we were a beacon to the rest of the country on how masks work!

Kansas at ‘the end of the first quarter’ of coronavirus

"The state’s top doctor is warning Kansans that we are just at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

. . .

According to the White House, Kansas has the 16th highest case rate and the 6th highest positive test rate in the country."

Re: Mask Shenanigans in Kansas
As I have stated all along counties in Kansas that did not enforce mask mandates had lower growth of COVID than the counties that did have mask mandates!

Kelly falsely credits mask mandate for getting COVID under control

"Numbers compiled from KDHE’s own reporting show counties with masks mandates experienced more case growth than counties without such requirements. That’s also true of the counties that adopted the governor’s latest mandate in November.

Over the first four weeks after her new mask mandate was adopted, the 38 counties that adopted the mandate added 2,385 cases per 100,000 of population, going from 5,599 to 7,986 — a 43% increase. But the 42 counties that never adopted a mask mandate experienced lower case growth; they went from 5,448 cases per 100,000 of population to 7,682, adding fewer cases (2,235) and having a smaller case increase (41%).

Governor Kelly offered no justification for her claim, but the available data doesn’t support it."

Wow! It's actually in writing - something I was trying to prove the day I created this thread!

30 facts you NEED to know: Your Covid Cribsheet

"In Kansas, counties without mask mandates actually had fewer Covid “cases” than counties with mask mandates. And despite masks being very common in Japan, they had their worst flu outbreak in decades in 2019."
