See...this qualifies as "suspicious" doesn't it?

Thats horrible logic, we dont wait for bridges to collapse before we repair them, im sure they get inspected and replaced if becoming old and fragile

One magnificent dish out of commission.

.... how many others can we rely on in the interim? The article mentions a dish in China. Are there other locations for hardcore asteroid searches?

Because.. yeah.
It feels like sabotage if it is one of the biggest and best.

(if we have more satellites, then I wish these guys luck in a speedy repair)

salt water corrodes steel cable.science!
odds are it had guy wire grips and the grip broke or shackle.
2000ft long, you will probably have to call in the big radio tower guys that focus on towers over a thousand feet as they got the gear to pull, tighten and tension meter big cables.
a dozer will be needed to pull it.
then repairs to reflector will be sheet metal.
add in for security guards to stay on site otherwise the ricans rob the site and extra cost because every cop has to write a ticket.best to hire off island or the job will get milked for years.with a few local hands to pacify the locals.

Working at Arecibo means you never have to listen to commercials. They just change to a different station.

Re: A broken cable smashed a hole 100 feet wide in the Arecibo Observatory, which searches for aliens and tracks dangerous asteroids
Notice the deceptive use of the word Wide instead of Long. Probably a few inches wide by 100feet long. Most homes are 100 feet long at least and baseboards are a few inches, to put it in perspective.
