Actually pretty important. buffet has bashed gold for years saying it is dead money. Now he is investing in it. What this says is he no longer has faith in the US economy and is parking his money in a rock. In other worlds, he believes the economy is going to collapse.

Once the free money the govt's are handing out to everyone runs out; the economies collapse shortly thereafter ..... or alternatively; if govt's are going to keep giving out free money to everyone to keep the economies from imploding; the currencies get destroyed ..... Gold flies under either scenario.

The only answer is that all these people are way in over their heads in debt.

If the loans stop coming, it crashes and burns.

If they keep printing and loaning, it crashes thru inflation, and eventually burns.

I don’t think he thinks it’s going to collapse or he would have bought physical gold instead of gold miners. He is recognizing that big time inflation is on the way and negative rates are going to cause gold to go on the same kind of bull run it went on in the 70s. So holding a gold miner who digs the stuff out of the ground at cost and sells it is about to become an incredibly lucrative business. Profit margins are going to be skyrocketing.
